Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back for PC and PS4 is a classic platform game. The predecessor of this title, Bubsy 3D, which debuted in 1996, is considered one of the worst platform games of all times. The new game was developed by a German studio Black Forest Games (creators of the well received Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams). The title was published by Accolade, a company that returned to life after being inactive for seventeen years.
In Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back the player assumes the role of the titular protagonist who is an anthropomorphic lynx. This time he starts a dangerous journey in order to find the mythical Golden Fleece. The Woolies, antagonists who appeared in previous games in the series, are trying to stop him. The title features large doses of humor.
Despite the fact that the graphics of Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back for PC and PS4 are three-dimensional, the title uses mechanics similar to side-scrolling, two-dimensional platform games. The player is traveling through colorful locations while avoiding dangers and traps. The protagonist can use typical moves – in addition to running and jumping he can sometimes float mid-air and swim. He will face varied and dangerous opponents – in addition to the mentioned Woolies among them there are sharks and giant bees. The protagonist will also be attacked by strong bosses, including aliens who travel in a flying saucer.
The colorful graphics of Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back are likeable, mostly thanks to the cartoonish style. It is worth mentioning that all dialogues are fully voiced-over and the protagonist can use more than one hundred new one-liners.
Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back for PC and PS4 is the first of at least a few more returns of known franchises planned by Accolade. After this game the company intends to resurrect titles like Hardball, Slave Zero, Redline, Eradicator and Deadlock.
