A horror adventure game, visually inspired by iconic animated movies. Bye Sweet Carole stars Lana Benton, a young girl seeking a way out of a horrible orphanage overrun by nightmarish rabbits.
Bye Sweet Carole is an indie horror adventure game. It was co-created by Little Sewing Machine and Meangrip Studios, and directed by Chris Darril, known for the Remothered series.
The main protagonist of Bye Sweet Carole is Lana Benton. Under urging of the terrifying Mr. Kyn, also known as the Old Hat, she finds herself transported into a mysterious garden. After reading the letters written by a certain "French", she decides to follow the trail of Carole Simmons, a girl her age who has somehow managed to escape this place. Lana must explore the nineteenth-century Bunny Hall orphanage and find a way out. She finds the building overrun by hordes of wild rabbits, trying to open a portal to her world.
Bye Sweet Carole is a side-scroller. The player must explore the orphanage and the surrounding garden, solving puzzles and obtaining clues regarding the world and its inhabitants to progress the story. We must be constantly on guard, as the rabbits are hostile and dangerous. Our character can't fight, so she must hide from the enemies, sneak behind them or flee when detected.
Not all encountered characters are hostile, thankfully. One friendly NPC is Mr. Baesi, a sizeshifter. Lana herself soon gains shapeshifting abilities as well; in the form of a rabbit, she can interact with other rabbits and reach usually inaccessible places. We can switch between these forms freely, which comes in handy when solving environmental puzzles.
The most striking feature of Bye Sweet Carole are its atmospheric, hand-drawn graphics, inspired by iconic animated movies.

Gamer Social Club: 8 / 10 by Sean "KingOTheCask" Richards
I know that I definitely presented a veritable list of hiccups with Bye Sweet Carole. But ultimately, they didn’t take me away fully from what I wanted: a good story. I am not one for crying (not a masculinity thing, I just don’t cry too much) but I did find myself getting a little choked up at the end of the game. Bye Sweet Carole will provide you with the gamut of emotions, from stress and discomfort, to happiness, to joy, and to outright sadness. You’ll panic when getting chased by a raging bunny with a meat mallet. You’ll laugh when you hear some of the lines from Baesie. And maybe you’ll cry when you see the resolution of Lana’s journey. Bye Sweet Carole offers this all in a neat little puzzle-game package.

Bye Sweet Carole is fine, but it doesn’t live up to the hype. Overall, it’s just aggressively fine; it’s not super fun to play, but it is really gorgeous. I hope the developers keep working on this game.

Bye Sweet Carole is a curate's egg of a game, with the presentation being truly superb and the storytelling excellent, but the bulk of the game experience just isn't fun. The frustrating platforming and stealth, combined with the review build being quite buggy, led to me finishing the game with gritted teeth rather than enjoyment. The bugs can be fixed (and the devs are working on patches) but the imbalance between the two gameplay styles is a more fundamental issue. If you can see past this then the game has a lot to offer in terms of aesthetic and story but, ironically, these can be enjoyed through watching a playthrough without subjecting yourself to the frustration.
