Calvino Noir

Calvino Noir is a stealth platformer game for PC, PS4 and iOS. It was developed by Calvino Noir Ltd., a studio founded with the intention of developing this production specifically.

Plot

As the title suggests, the developers’ main inspiration were hardboiled movies. The action takes us to the ‘30s of the past century, and we assume control over a team of thieves who commit audacious robberies. Among the team members, we can find such characters as the deserter name Wilt who deserted from the British army during World War I, the idealistic orphan Siska, and Arno, a chemical weapon specialist. Each hero has their own unique skills and equipment, and only strict cooperation between the criminals can ensure success of a mission.

Mechanics

In the campaign, we take on a number of difficult robberies that are joined together by a rich story told in episodes. Maps are built of three-dimensional objects but the gameplay takes place in two dimensions. Every action has to be carefully planned which requires us to conduct reconnaissance and gather information. When we are ready, the time comes to execute the plan with surgical precision. The players are forced to avoid guards, omit security measures, and solve puzzles.

All locations are designed to feel like real places. For example, if we try to get inside a church, we won’t find any conveniently placed ventilation shafts or perfect hiding spots in its architectonic plan. It forces the players to plan ahead since if we make a mistake, we can’t count on the level’s design to let us get away with it.

Moreover, as befits a stealth game, characters of Calvino Noir for PC, PS4 and iOS are no killing machines. Some of them aren’t even able to stun anyone, and even the strongest thief is no good against several armed guards.
