Chimera is a co-op first-person shooter heavily emphasizing survival elements - such as managing food - and expanding bases. IT was developed and published by a Polish studio Creepy Jar -known for the acclaimed game Green Hell.

Plot

Chimera is set on an alien, seemingly safe planet plagued by disasters caused by the titular star - mainly destructive fire and ice. The player character is a convict from Earth, participating in a research expedition. He's tasked with exploring this new world and creating a base to face the deadly climate and hordes of enemies. As it soon turns out, the planet is deeming with hostile inhabitants.

Though the game does feature a story campaign - which can be completed solo or in co-op for up to four people (if we choose singleplayer, we'll be accompanied by AI-controlled allies) - it's also very open-ended. Players can freely explore the game's entire open world, even after completing the main storyline.

The main pros of the game

  • Visuals and Performance: The game features stunning graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5, with smooth performance even on older hardware. The dynamic environment changes, such as solar flares, enhance immersion.
  • Engaging Gameplay: The combination of base building, exploration, and combat creates an engaging gameplay loop. The pull-based logistics system offers a unique take on resource management, differing from traditional conveyor belt mechanics.
  • Exploration Incentives: Players are encouraged to explore the world to gather resources and blueprints, which adds depth to gameplay. The presence of hostile creatures adds an element of danger and excitement during exploration.
  • Cooperative Play: The option for multiplayer (up to four players) enhances the experience, making it more enjoyable to build and defend bases together.
  • Potential for Growth: The game is in early access with a roadmap for future updates, indicating a commitment from developers to expand and refine the game.

The main cons of the game

  • Inventory and Management Issues: The inventory management system is cumbersome, lacking essential quality-of-life features such as easy item transfers and crafting from storage.
  • Building Mechanics: While building is flexible, it can be clunky, and there are complaints about the restrictive grid system and the need for manual adjustments.
  • Combat and Enemy Variety: The combat mechanics are considered basic, and there is a desire for more diverse enemy types and challenges during gameplay.
  • Repetitive Tasks: Players have noted that the grind for research points can detract from the enjoyment of base building, turning gameplay into a repetitive cycle of resource gathering.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Quality of Life Improvements: Players have requested enhancements such as a hotbar for quick access to items, larger text sizes for better readability, and clearer navigation tools (e.g., a compass or minimap).
  • Transportation Options: Many users expressed a desire for vehicles or fast travel options to reduce the time spent traversing the map.
  • Expanded Combat Mechanics: Suggestions include adding more weapon types, melee combat options, and improved enemy AI to enhance the challenge.
  • Customization Options: Players want more customization features for their bases, including cosmetic options and the ability to create more complex factory layouts.

Summary

  • Overall, "StarRupture" showcases a solid foundation with great potential, particularly for fans of the factory-building genre. While it has its flaws, the developers' commitment to ongoing updates and improvements is promising for the game's future.
