Code Vein 2 is a sequel of the action RPG from the soulslike genre titled Code Vein, released back in 2019. The game was developed and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, which oversees the brand.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Code Vein II is based on the mechanics developed for the first part of the series. We watch the action from a third-person perspective (TPP), explore locations and engage in dynamic duels with opponents, among whom we will find both weak enemies and powerful bosses.

Combat, opponents and character development

On the battlefield, we must be constantly moving, making good use of attacks and skills of our character, as well as looking for gaps in the opponents' defense. We can also suck the blood of enemies to gain access to special abilities that increase our combat potential. As we progress, we develop our character and acquire better equipment, thus adapting it to individual needs and preferences.

Partners

Companions equipped with unique skills play an important role here, providing indispensable help on the battlefield. They also have their own stories to tell, and the game allows us to form bonds with each of them and shape our journey together with them.

A bold sequel with great combat and character moments, but uneven design choices stop Code Vein II from reaching its full potential.

Code Vein II is very, very close to joining From Software’s games and the Nioh series in the upper echelons of soulslikes. A quality narrative, fluid combat and an excellent, Ocarina of Time-like approach to progression combine in a way that makes it very hard to put the controller down. It does feel like it’s in search of an identity of its own at times, and it’s unlikely to develop the reputation that Ocarina of Time has for that reason, but Code Vein II has a lot going for it.

The main pros of the game

  • Character Creator: The character creation system is highly detailed and allows for significant customization, arguably one of the strongest aspects of the game.
  • Art Style and Aesthetics: The game retains a solid aesthetic, with some users praising the character designs and visuals, even if they feel different from the first game.
  • Combat System: Many players find the combat enjoyable, with a focus on new mechanics and weapon types, including the addition of dual blades and rune blades.
  • Story and Characters: While opinions vary, some players appreciate the new characters and story arcs, particularly the emotional depth and development of certain characters.
  • Exploration Elements: The game offers an open-world design with various points of interest and hidden items, which some players find rewarding.

The main cons of the game

  • Performance Issues: Many users report significant performance problems, including low frame rates, stuttering, and crashes, particularly in open-world areas.
  • Censorship: Some players express disappointment over the censorship of character outfits, feeling it detracts from the game’s appeal.
  • Inconsistency with Code Vein 1: Players note that the game feels disconnected from the first installment, both in terms of story and gameplay mechanics.
  • Difficulty and Enemy Design: The enemy design and difficulty spikes are criticized, with some bosses being seen as overly punishing or unbalanced.
  • UI/UX Problems: The user interface is described as cluttered and confusing, making navigation and understanding of mechanics more difficult.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Multiplayer: The absence of co-op play, which was a significant feature in the first game, has disappointed many fans.
  • Blood Veil System: The changes to the blood veil mechanics and the overall combat feel have not been well-received; players miss the depth of the previous system.
  • Lore and World-Building: Many users feel the game lacks the cohesive lore and world-building that made the first game engaging, with some story elements feeling rushed or poorly explained.
  • Replayability: While players can achieve all endings in one playthrough, some feel this diminishes the incentive to replay the game.

Conclusion

    Summary

    • Overall, CODE VEIN II has a mix of enjoyable elements and significant drawbacks. While it retains some charm and introduces new mechanics, many players feel it fails to live up to the expectations set by its predecessor, particularly regarding performance, story coherence, and the removal of beloved features like multiplayer. It may be worth waiting for patches and optimizations before purchasing, especially at full price.
