The Surge 2 is a three-dimensional TPP action RPG in which we play as a man equipped with a powerful exoskeleton. This title is set in the dark SF world, in which man-made technology turned against him. This production is a continuation of The Surge from 2017 and its authors are the developers from Deck 13 (also known from cooperation with CI Games on Lords of the Fallen).

Story

The action of The Surge 2 is set in a dark universe in the convention of science fiction, in which people have significantly developed technology and started to rely more and more on machines. Unfortunately, creations do not always listen to their creators, sometimes leading to dramatic events.

Deep, varied, and punchy combat make The Surge 2 worth the effort, even if you have to bear through its lifeless story.

Game Informer: 8.5 / 10 by Andrew Reiner

The Surge 2 is challenging, but finds ways to continually reward the player, whether it's a new piece of armor, weapon, or a life-saving shortcut

Full Review

TheSixthAxis: 7 / 10 by Nic Reuben

Hugely satisfying combat and some smart world design carries a decent Souls-like that feels like a solid, if safe, alternative for genre fans. The Surge 2 is competent, with flashes of excellence, but loses some of its own identity in the shadows of its inspirations.

The main pros of the game

  • Combat Mechanics: The game features an improved combat system with a new directional parry mechanic, making battles feel more engaging and strategic. The limb dismemberment system adds depth to fights, allowing players to target specific body parts of enemies for loot.
  • World Design: Jericho City is praised for its visually appealing, futuristic setting. The level design is more open and interconnected compared to the first game, encouraging exploration and backtracking.
  • Variety of Gear and Customization: There is a significant increase in the variety of weapons, armor sets, and implants that allow for diverse character builds and playstyles.
  • Improved Graphics and Performance: Many players noted that the game runs smoothly and has a visually appealing aesthetic, despite some concerns about texture quality and performance issues on certain hardware.
  • Side Quests and NPC Interaction: The game includes more side quests and NPCs, adding depth to the gameplay experience.

The main cons of the game

  • Story and Character Development: The narrative is often described as weak and less engaging than the first game. Players feel that the new protagonist lacks personality, and the overall story feels generic.
  • Boss Design: Many players found the bosses to be less memorable and engaging compared to the first game, with some encounters feeling repetitive or too easy.
  • Level Navigation: The lack of a proper map system and confusing level layouts led to frustration for players trying to navigate Jericho City.
  • Performance Issues: Several users reported crashes, especially on AMD hardware, and problems with textures not loading correctly, which detracted from the overall experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Depth in Storytelling: Players wished for a more compelling narrative and character arcs, similar to the first game, with a stronger emotional connection to the protagonist.
  • Variety in Enemy Design: Some players noted that despite increased enemy types, many felt similar, and there was a lack of truly unique encounters.
  • Difficulty Balancing: A common complaint was that the game felt unbalanced, with some sections being too easy, especially in the latter half, leading to a lack of challenge.
  • Improved Map and Quest Tracking: Users expressed a desire for a better system to track quests and navigate the world, as the current implementation was seen as cumbersome and inefficient.

Summary

  • Overall, while The Surge 2 is considered a solid sequel with many improvements over its predecessor, it also carries some criticisms regarding its narrative depth, enemy variety, and performance issues. Players who enjoy the souls-like genre and appreciate the combat mechanics may find it a worthwhile experience, especially if purchased on sale.
