Company of Heroes 2 Expansion Pack

Released

Release Date: November 18, 2014

Strategy, World War II, RTS, Tactics, War Strategy, Singleplayer

The second stand-alone expansion for Company of Heroes 2, the game developed in 2013 by the Relic Entertainment studio. As the subtitle of the add-on suggests, in the game we return to the Western Front of World War II during the famous German counter-offensive in the Ardennes. In contrast to the first expansion that focused on multiplayer mode, this time the developers decided to concentrate on the single player campaign.

Ardennes Assault is the second major expansion for Company of Heroes 2, a real-time strategy game by Relic Entertainment. Contrary to the previous add-on, West Front Armies, Ardennes Assault focuses on the single player mode. It offers an extensive solo campaign, the eponymous Ardennes Assault, that takes place on the western front between years 1944 and 1945. Ardennes Assault is a standalone expansion that does not require the original game in order to work.

This expansion allows the players to take command of the American military fighting against the German Oberkommando West. Ardennes Assault is divided into 18 missions, which is more than the basic Company of Heroes 2 offered. The subsequent scenarios merge into a consistent story that dynamically changes on the basis of the choices we make in every phase. The players can also take control of three previously unavailable American companies that have unique officers and require a specific play style. In combat, we have limited resources at our disposal so careful planning is key. All the more so that our units gain experience and develop their fighting ability from mission to mission.

New Game Network: 65 / 100 by Tim Reid

Company of Heroes 2: Ardennes Assault has some good ideas and atmospheric levels but the ludicrous asking price, lack of difficulty balancing and problematic AI leave this expansion out in the cold.

ZTGD: 7.5 / 10 by Sophie Halliday

The game offers different perspectives. Its game play is predicated on cause and effect. In short, there are a lot of moving parts that take time to master. The fast-paced nature of the campaign leaves little room to take a breath when in the middle of a mission. While this is a little overwhelming for new players, it certainly offers an awful lot of excitement and replay value.

Cubed3: 6 / 10

Company of Heroes 2: Ardennes Assault makes some big moves in the RTS genre, and most are steps in the right direction. The battles have the potential to be fun, chaotic, and it is fulfilling to watch a rampaging tank be stopped and then to push back the onslaught. However, many times the 'rock, paper, scissors' element, compounded by the difficulty in telling units apart, makes the game an exercise in frustration as a player's well-crafted plans are ruined by an ultimately randomly-chosen hard counter that puts the player too far back to recover.

The main pros of the game

  • Engaging Single-Player Campaign: Many users appreciate the additional single-player content that offers a different perspective on the Western Front, providing a unique experience compared to the original game.
  • Dynamic Gameplay Mechanics: The campaign features strategic elements where players can move forces on a map, enhancing the tactical depth of the gameplay.
  • Historical Context: The campaign is set during the Battle of the Bulge, which adds an interesting historical backdrop that some players find appealing.
  • Variety of Missions: The campaign includes a range of missions with modifiers, which some players enjoy for the challenge and diversity.

The main cons of the game

  • Severe Difficulty Imbalance: Many users criticize the AI for being unfairly powerful, especially in later missions, leading to frustration and a sense of hopelessness in battles.
  • Bugs and Technical Issues: Players report numerous bugs, such as unkillable enemy tanks and issues with deploying certain units, detracting from the overall experience.
  • Lack of Mid-Mission Saves: The absence of save points during missions is seen as overly punishing, especially given the game's mechanics that penalize players for losing units.
  • Monetization Concerns: Some users feel that the game is designed to push additional purchases, with factions and content locked behind paywalls, which creates a negative perception of the DLC.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Balanced Gameplay: Users express a desire for better balance in unit strength and resources, advocating for a fairer challenge where both the player and AI are held to the same standards.
  • More Content: While 18 missions are included, players feel that more diverse and engaging content is needed to justify the purchase, especially in comparison to previous campaigns.
  • Improved Company Health Mechanics: The system that penalizes players for unit losses and affects overall company health is seen as flawed and in need of refinement.
  • Clearer DLC Structure: Users want a more straightforward understanding of what is included in the game and its various DLCs, as the current system is perceived as convoluted and confusing.

Summary

  • Overall, while Ardennes Assault offers an intriguing single-player experience within the Company of Heroes 2 universe, it is marred by balancing issues, technical problems, and concerns about monetization and content availability.
