Company of Heroes 2 Expansion Pack

Released

Release Date: June 24, 2014

Strategy, World War II, RTS, Tactics, War Strategy, Multiplayer, Singleplayer, Internet

The first major standalone expansion for Company of Heroes 2, a popular war strategy game from Relic Entertainment. Contrary to the vanilla game, which focuses on the Russian-German struggle on the Eastern Front, the add-on takes us to the West, letting us assume command over two completely new armies that so far were only available in DLCs. We may lead either the US Army or the German Oberkommando.

The Western Front Armies is an expansion for the 2013’s Company of Heroes 2 for PC, a strategy game set during the World War II. However, it differs from the previous minor DLC since it is a completely standalone add-on which does not require having the original game installed. The expansion is pretty big in size and scope and is meant solely for multiplayer gameplay.

As the title suggests, the DLC is focused on the European Western Front of the World War II. It is a big change in relation to the vanilla game which was completely concentrated on the Eastern Front. The “westernization” of the production is manifested mainly by the introduction of two additional sides of the conflict: the United States Armed Forces and the German Oberkommando, which fought in Western Europe. What is interesting, The Western Front Armies is not a unified whole since both of the aforementioned armies were sold separately in the past. Each new faction received previously unavailable abilities, enhancements, strategic and tactical capabilities as well as, most importantly, completely new units (for example: airborne infantry, the Sherman tank, the Sturmtiger and Jagdtiger cannons, or the P-47 Thunderbolt airplane.

If you'd like to pick up just one of the new factions, that'll only run you 10 pounds, and with that you can start playing one of the best World War 2 strategy games ever made... alongside its near-perfect predecessor, of course.

If you're yet to try out Company of Heroes, which is one of the best multiplayer RTS experiences currently available, this is a great opportunity to do so. Just bear in mind that aside from skirmishes you won't get any singleplayer options.

New or returning player - it doesn't really matter. This is Company of Heroes 2 at its best, a standalone that focuses on the series' core: man and machine duking it out across Europe. Those seeking a narrative will find plenty of stories in the tense battles amid crumbling towns and dark forests, so the campaign isn't missed at all. There's no fluff, and while there are lots of maps and loadouts to consider, one can still jump into an entertaining, dramatic battle right off the bat.

The main cons of the game

  • Unbalanced Factions: Users frequently mention that the factions are poorly balanced, with some factions being overpowered, leading to a "pay-to-win" perception.

  • Matchmaking Issues: Many reviews highlight problems with matchmaking, where players often face opponents of significantly higher skill levels, resulting in unbalanced matches.
  • Server Issues: Some users report frequent disconnections from Relic's servers, which negatively impacts the online gaming experience.
