Crown Gambit is a production that combines elements of RPGs and card games. It was developed by the independent French studio Wild Wits, which has the project Aetheris in its portfolio.
Crown Gambit transports us to a fantasy universe inspired by Celtic and Breton folklore. The game's action takes place in the kingdom of Meodred, which is dealing with a lack of a ruler and a power struggle waged by clans trying to seat their claimant on the throne. The main characters of the game are three paladins holding relics, on whose actions and choices depends the fate of the entire world around them.
Crown Gambit provides us with three diverse characters. We're talking about the quarrelsome Aliza, the cleric Hael equipped with a mace, and Rollo who is a real mountain of muscles.
The gameplay is primarily about card battles taking place in turn-based mode. We play cards representing specific attacks and skills of individual characters. Every paladin has an individual deck. The key to success is to compose it in such a way that its individual elements not only complement each other, but also fill the gaps in decks related to other characters.
This is not the end, because during combat we can make use of the so-called Ancestral Grace. It's the ancient power dormant in the relics held by the heroes. It may influence the outcome of many battles, but the cost of using it may be high.
Various opponents stand in our way. Among them, we will find both common bandits and other paladins representing the opposite side of the barricade, as well as terrifying beasts.
Making choices plays an important role in Crown Gambit. Our decisions not only affect how certain NPCs react to us, but also what will happen next and how our adventure will end. The most important of them concerns which of the contenders for the throne will have our support and try to save the kingdom from falling.
Among the elements of the graphic design of Crown Gambit, the illustrations made by the artist using the pseudonym Gobert are leading. The visuals primarily consist of character and card drawings, as well as animations accompanying the execution of individual attacks.
