Release Date: 2026
A sequel to the successful 2017 Polish survival horror game, developed by the Russian studio Ice-Pick Lodge, known for the Pathologic series. In Darkwood 2, we explore the dried-up Aral Sea bed during the day. Our characters must battle enemies after nightfall, trying to survive.
The survival horror game Darkwood was released back in 2017 and it achieved significant success, but it took many years before it was turned into a sequel. Interestingly, the sequel was developed by the Russian studio Ice-Pick Lodge (known for the "Pathologic" series), while the creators of the original from the Polish team Acid Wizard served only as consultants for the second game. The Polish studio also retained the rights to the Darkwood brand.
Similar to the original, in Darkwood 2 the action is viewed from a bird's-eye perspective (specifically, a top-down view).
The game offers us an open world, featuring both dense forests and barren deserts, as well as swamps. As we explore our surroundings, we find abandoned settlements, rusty shipwrecks, deserted oil platforms, abandoned industrial complexes and power plants, and a secret biological laboratory.
We mainly explore this eerie land during the day. This allows us not only to uncover its secrets but also (or perhaps primarily) to find resources that will enable us to survive. This place is full of dangers, led by gangs of bikers and looters, former soldiers, and other deadly threats to our character.
The dangers reveal their full potential at night, so we must think ahead about arming ourselves, finding shelter, and building the best possible fortifications. It is up to us whether we try to confront hostiles in direct combat or hide from them, for example, by taking refuge in the basement of one of the buildings. Additionally, the game allows us to drink potions that enhance our combat capabilities and provide us with various skills.
Darkwood 2 takes us to the area around the Aral Sea, which began to dry up after the fall of the Soviet Union, giving rise to an anomaly in the form of a gloomy, ever-expanding forest that consumes everything in its path. During the game we take on characters diverse in terms of history and motivation, and we make decisions that impact the future of the protagonists and the entire world surrounding them.
As was the case in the first part of the series, the graphics of Darkwood 2 are kept in a dark, drab color scheme.
