In 2014, DeadCore, a hybrid of FPS and 3D platformer, was released on PC (and three years later on consoles), being the debut project of independent French studio 5 Bits Games. Years later, the developers behind it decided to revisit their creation and prepare a remastered version, titled DeadCore Redux.
Compared to the original ,DeadCore Redux stands out primarily due to refreshed graphics. The whole game was prepared on the basis of the Unity HDRP engine, which resulted in a significant improvement in lighting and volumetric effects. In addition, the authors leaned on models and textures, as well as redesigned the user interface. The changes did not omit the sound layer as well, and among them is a remastered soundtrack.
It doesn't end there, as the described remaster has been enriched with a new story level, the Gate, added before the "real" end of the adventure. There is also a new offline rank system, where we earn badges for our achievements in each level. To top it all off, there is native pad support.
In DeadCore Redux, the action is viewed from a first-person perspective (FPP). Our main goal is to break through the futuristic Tower and reach the very top of this megastructure.
To accomplish this task, we have to overcome numerous environmental challenges involving jumping on platforms and avoiding traps and circumventing terrain obstacles, as well as solve puzzles. The latter are based on the manipulation of the infrastructure of the traversed object, which is accomplished using the SwitchGun, which allows you to activate or deactivate various mechanisms. There is also no shortage of opportunities to fight enemies, as the structure is patrolled by robots, which must be neutralized.
As we progress, we not only push the story forward, but also develop the character, making use of the upgrades we gain along the way. The latter provide access to new powers and moves. In addition, diaries with memories of past explorers, songs for speedrun mode or sparks to unlock new levels await the finder.
As the name suggests, speedrun is a special mode in which you pass each level in time. We can show off our achievements in this mode to the whole world through online scoreboards.
In DeadCore we find ourselves in a huge Tower standing in a mysterious void. In the course of the game we play as a character suffering from amnesia, who, in order to find out who he is and how he ended up in this place, must reach the very top of this structure.
