Disney Speedstorm is a wacky racing game starring Disney and Pixar characters. It was developed by Gameloft.

Mechanics

Every race in Disney Speedstorm is a no-holds barred, intense struggle with nearly no rules. The driving system is highly arcade, requiring well-timed drifting, boosting and good use of the characters' special abilities.

The wide character roster includes Captain Jack Sparrow, Mulan, Mickey Mouse, Sulley, the Beast and many more. We'll get to drive various vehicles and race on tracks inspired by the locations from the original movies. These include the pirate island from Pirates of the Caribbean, the tropical forest from The Jungle Book and the Great Wall of China from Mulan.

As we progress through the game, we can upgrade our characters' stats and unlock cosmetics we can apply to the drivers and the vehicles.

The main pros of the game

  • Fun Gameplay: Players enjoy the racing mechanics, which are often compared favorably to other kart racing games like Mario Kart. The controls are described as responsive and satisfying, especially the drifting and boosting mechanics.
  • Visual Appeal: The game features colorful graphics and well-designed tracks inspired by Disney and Pixar movies, which enhance the overall experience.
  • Character Variety: There is a diverse roster of Disney characters, each with unique abilities, adding a layer of strategy to races.
  • Soundtrack: The remixed Disney songs are a highlight, contributing to the nostalgic feel of the game.
  • Multiplayer Options: Players can race with friends in regulated multiplayer modes, allowing for fair play without the influence of upgrades.
  • Regular Updates: The game receives seasonal updates with new characters and tracks, keeping the content fresh.

The main cons of the game

  • Pay-to-Win Mechanics: A significant number of players criticize the game for its monetization strategy, which heavily favors those willing to spend money. Upgrading characters and unlocking new ones often requires real money, making it difficult for free-to-play players to compete.
  • Matchmaking Issues: Many users report frustrating matchmaking experiences, where lower-level players are pitted against high-level opponents, leading to a lack of competitive balance.
  • Grind and Progression: The game is described as grindy, with players feeling that progression is slow and often locked behind paywalls. This can make the game feel tedious, especially for new players.
  • Complex Monetization System: The presence of multiple in-game currencies and expensive bundles is seen as overwhelming and predatory, detracting from the enjoyment of the game.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Local Play Accessibility: Some users express disappointment that local multiplayer is not available until players reach a certain rank, which can be a barrier for casual play.
  • Fairer Progression Systems: Many players wish for a more straightforward upgrade system that does not rely on loot boxes or pay-to-win mechanics. There is a desire for a game that allows skill and dedication to dictate success rather than monetary investment.
  • Improved Matchmaking: Users would like to see better matchmaking that considers player skill and character levels, making races more competitive and enjoyable.
  • Cosmetic Customization: While some players appreciate the character designs, there’s feedback regarding a lack of cosmetic customization options for karts that do not impact gameplay.

Summary

  • Overall, while Disney Speedstorm has a solid foundation with enjoyable gameplay and appealing visuals, the monetization strategies and progression systems have led to significant criticism from users.
