A cooperative isometric action game in which we take on the role of desert wanderers. DuneCrawl can be played alone or with up to three friends. We pilot a giant crustacean armed with cannons, exploring a sandy world full of hidden loot. The game features hand-drawn environments.
Alientrap is an independent studio from Canada, known for games such as Capsized, Cryptark, and Gunhead. Their coop-focused game, DuneCrawl, transports us to a sand-filled world that we explore on the back of a giant crab.
The open world of DuneCrawl is a vast, arid land, full of NPCs offering quests, local towns attacked by bandits, and hidden loot. During our journey we can ride the armored crustacean and we encounter both hostile outposts and friends in need. The natives supply us with useful accessories for a fee, allowing us to upgrade our mobile home.
The battles can be divided into two categories. The first includes fast, bloody skirmishes with groups of regular enemies using melee and ranged weapons. Keeping an eye on everyone around us (thanks to the isometric perspective), we dodge and block attacks while dealing damage with our own arsenal. The second type involves confrontations where we utilize our giant, "sitting at the helm". We avoid projectiles from enemy cannons and try to position the heavy crab at the right angle to return fire.
When we are not riding the crustacean, we roam around a small platform located on its back. Our large travel companion is equipped not only with cannons but also with supplies of medicine, ammunition, and a storage for items. Access to the cannons allows us to launch ourselves onto nearby platforms or opponent-controlled crabs, boarding them.
Although DuneCrawl can be enjoyed solo, the game is designed for cooperation with up to four players. Coop gameplay is available both online and locally: via LAN or on a split screen.
Our adventure in DuneCrawl begins in a desert village, where a giant crustacean arrives and destroys our home. After a few victorious cannon skirmishes with the invaders, we acquire our own "walking platform" and, piloting it, set off into the sandy world to discover the reason for the attack.
DuneCrawl stands out with its colorful aesthetics, combining three-dimensional characters with hand-drawn 2D environments.
