Dungeon Keeper (1997) Description
Dungeon Keeper is an innovative strategy game created by Peter Molyneux and his studio Bullfrog Productions. Since its release in 1997 for PC, the title gained a cult status. Unlike many dungeon crawlers popular in 1990s, Dungeon Keeper lets you build and defend a network of dungeons, while playing as an evil overlord.
Plot
Dungeon Keeper for PC is themed around ages-long struggle of heroes exploring dungeons filled with hideous monsters. This time, however, you do not assume the role of a noble knight, but a demonic lord of dungeons, who is trying hard to protect his domain from other tyrants as well as daring adventurers.
Mechanics
Gameplay in Dungeon Keeper is an original combination of economic real-time strategy and RPG elements. In order to protect your realm, you have to expand the dungeons and make space for specific rooms, such as torture chamber, training ground, henhouse, etc. All this effort is needed in order to make the compound greater and greater, and to make new allies from among merciless monsters. At the same time you have to keep an eye on your economy, by looking out for new lodes of gold and diamonds, needed for dungeon expansion as well as recruiting and training warriors. As you expand, you should also remember about technological development in order to gain access to many useful items, such as traps, trapdoors, solid gates, etc.
Game modes
Dungeon Keeper for PC offers a single player campaign made up of 20 main missions and 5 extra missions, each one with specific objectives. If you enjoy playing with other people, you can play at 15 dedicated multiplayer maps. Up to 4 people can play Dungeon Keeper together via LAN or online.
Technical aspects
Back in its time Bullfrog Productions’s Dungeon Keeper for PC stood out with excellent visuals that used 3D accelerators. The graphics is still clear. The game uses isometric view, but there is an option of switching it to first-person perspective.
