Patapez Interactive is an independent development studio from Argentina, founded by Bruno Bombardi. The company has been around since 2013. Dunjungle described here is as an action platformer enriched with roguelite elements, serving as the largest project in the studio's portfolio at the time of release.

Gameplay

In Dunjungle events are viewed from the side. During the game we take on the role of a brave monkey, and our task is to save the jungle from a destructive force that is sweeping through it, transforming its peaceful inhabitants.

Character classes and jungle exploration

Before embarking on the journey, we choose one of the character classes, which are differentiated by their strengths and weaknesses. The adventure leads us through procedurally generated locations, including dungeons, crypts, and temples. As we explore them, we not only jump across platforms and avoid traps and terrain obstacles but also fight enemies.

Weapons and opponents

The monkey we control makes use of a wide range of weapons, as well as spells and relics. Weapons can be further enhanced with elemental effects, allowing us to set enemies on fire, freeze them, strike them with lightning, or push them into chasms with the help of wind. In addition to regular foes, we encounter much more powerful bosses along the way.

Consequences of death

After death, we have no choice but to start a new expedition. The game allows us to keep unlocked equipment and spells, and it also remembers the characters we managed to save in previous attempts. This way, even if we fail, we are still gradually getting closer to achieving the ultimate goal.

Checkpoint Gaming: 8 / 10

While Dunjungle won’t satisfy anyone looking for a deep narrative, its pleasing pixel art did enough to charm me. It may take a while to unlock most of its content, but once you’re past those slow early hours, Dunjungle is a load of fun and brims with variety. I had a great time with Dunjungle, and if you like roguelike platformers, you likely will as well.
