In April 2024, the independent Surgent Studios, founded by Abubakar Salim, the reenactor of the lead role in Assassin's Creed Origins, delivered its debut work entitled Tales of Kenzera: ZAU, while it followed up with the horror game Dead Take. After games about grief and violence, the team decided on a much lighter venture. The fruit of this idea is the cooperative "extraction platformer" described here under the title FixForce.
In FixForce, we view the action from a first-person perspective (FPP). During the gameplay we play the role of members of the title brigade, which is engaged in repairing damaged machines, not shying away from carrying out additional orders.
They arrive at the site by van, and after finishing the job they still have to evacuate the location to complete a given mission successfully. The different levels have different variants, which makes the subsequent tasks different from each other.
The main working tool of each FixForce member is the so-called drill-wrench. Contrary to its name, it does not work like a combination of a drill and a wrench (although it looks like one), but is somewhat reminiscent of the Gravity Gun from the Half-Life 2 game, allowing us to move objects easily. Using it, we can collect spare parts and place them in damaged equipment, as well as lift objects, creating additional platforms and passageways to otherwise inaccessible places.
As we progress, we accumulate resources, which we exchange for other useful tools.
We are hindered in our work by rogue robots attacking not only us, but also our constructions. We fight them by throwing objects at them.
At the same time we must be careful not to literally lose our heads in the heat of battle or as a result of an accident. Fortunately, the latter can be recovered and attached to another body, so after "death" we can return to action ... as long as our companions come to our rescue. We can also lose the battery that powers us, for example, if we decide to use it to power one of the objects.
FixForce is designed for multiplayer online co-op gameplay with up to 5 people. Communication is enabled by voice chat, taking into account the distance between players.
