Forestrike is an action game with roguelite elements in which we assume the role of Yu, a martial arts practitioner. The game focuses primarily on engaging in combat. This combat can be practiced inside the protagonist's mind before engaging in actual duels, allowing us to predict enemy moves and prepare effectively.
Skeleton Crew Studio is a Japanese development team with a portfolio that includes projects like BackSlash, Olija, and Cyanide & Happiness: Freakpocalypse. The team from Kyoto is also behind Forestrike, an action game with roguelite elements focused on martial arts.
In Forestrike the action is viewed from the side. During the game we take on the role of a hero named Yu, who travels across the country with the mission of freeing the emperor from the influence of the sinister Admiral. To achieve this, the protagonist must reach eccentric masters and learn martial arts techniques, which he will then use against the enemies that stand in his way.
Fights with enemies are the core of the gameplay. The duels are dynamic, and the enemies outnumber us, making it easy to face defeat. The situation is complicated by the fact that after Yu's death, he must start the entire journey from the beginning. Fortunately, the hero has one significant advantage over his adversaries.
The protagonist can use what is called prediction, a technique that allows him to practice each encounter in the fortress of his mind. Although this doesn't guarantee victory, it enables him to test different tactics and devise a way to emerge from a given skirmish unscathed or at least in one piece.
Despite everything, it is worth focusing on learning improvisation and adapting to situations on the battlefield. Only in this way will Yu achieve his ultimate goal, which is victory without foresight.
While exploring the randomly generated game world, it's worth visiting not only the masters from whom we learn new techniques (based on which we create and improve the sequences of strikes Yu delivers on the battlefield) but also the inns, where we can regenerate our depleted strength.
The graphics of Forestrike are done in pixel art technique.

Game Ratings for Forestrike Video Game.
Gaming Nexus: 8.5 / 10 by Rob Larkin
Some stability issues still hold Forestrike back but when it's working, and it mostly does, it really works. The foresight mechanic is an excellent way to unlock fluid combat scenarios and it has the right amount of strategy required to be more than a mindless button masher. But you will need to find the right timing to mash the buttons so there is a level of skill required, but ample opportunity to practice your way to mastery. There is enough variety between the disciplines and the roguelike nature of earning skills and items on each run to keep things interesting long past when you get your money's worth from a title that only comes in at 10 bucks to begin with.
Gameffine: 80 / 100 by Hemang Chauhan
Despite a steeper-than-usual learning curve, some balance issues, and dealing with bad RNG at the start, Forestrike is one of the few games where you feel like mastering a martial arts skill. There is a depth of tactics game, mixed with the reflexes of a fighting game and the innovative “Forsight mechanic”, making its gameplay stand out among its peers, and it should be commended. Those MA philosophies get corporate well into a story whose writing punches well above its weight compared to similar rogue-lites. This will certainly not be for everyone, but those with patience and a desire for mastery are sure to find a worthwhile experience.
Nintendo Life: 7 / 10 by Oliver Reynolds
Overall, however, while Forestrike boasts strong gameplay and a lovely, abstract pixel-art aesthetic, its core hook removes a sense of risk. This is definitely a difficult game at its heart, but the ability to practise your runs with no consequences dulls its edge a bit too much.
