God of War: Ragnarok Expansion Pack
GoW Ragnarok - Valhalla
Release Date: December 12, 2023
Valhalla is a free DLC to God of War: Ragnarok, set in the titular Norse afterlife. The expansion is a roguelike, meaning permadeath and many random elements each run.
God of War: Ragnarok - Valhalla is a free expansion to the 2022 action adventure game. Like the base game, it was developed by Sony Santa Monica.
The expansion is set after the events of Ragnarok. It takes place in the titular Norse afterlife for fallen warriors. This journey lets Kratos make peace with his past and think about the future. He goes there alone, without his son, accompanied only by Mimir's head.
The journey to Valhalla differs from Kratos' previous adventures, as the DLC is a roguelike. Every death forces us to return to the beginning but lets us keep acquired resources, making each run easier than the last.
We start the game with all the upgrades from the base game, earning further upgrades along the way, such as perks and runic attacks. They let us greatly customize our playstyle, experimentation being encouraged.
We'll face both combat and numerous puzzles. Many elements, such as encountered enemies, are randomly determined each run, which means the game stays fresh for longer.
Like the base version of God of War: Ragnarok, the DLC only supports singleplayer. It offers five difficulty levels - the higher we choose, the greater rewards we'll receive. We can change the difficulty at the beginning of each run.
Valhalla is not a standalone expansion, requiring the full version of God of War: Ragnarok.

God of War is a series of action adventure games with a third-person perspective (TPP) view. The authors of the series strongly allude to the convention of so-called slashers (hack'n'slash) - the essence of gameplay here is the brutal elimination of hordes of enemies and fighting giant bosses. Bloody carnage is interspersed with simple logic puzzles and simple platforming elements. The series also offers the possibility to develop the protagonist and improve his arsenal.
More than a year and a half after its release on PS4 and PS5, Sony announced a PC-dedicated version of God of War: Ragnarok. The continuation of Kratos and Atreus' adventure will arrive on personal computers in September.

Kratos is here to contemplate his future purpose and learns to forgive himself for his past deeds while still acknowledging and learning from them, making for a potent mix of the Greek and Norse sides of the franchise with some returning characters, locations and other bits that I wouldn’t want to spoil. It’s a treat for longtime fans as well as a very appreciated bit of history for those who jumped on in recent entries.

The Rogue-lite approach to gameplay is a very interesting treatment that could be a good way to extend the life of this single-player production. It's a good way to delve back into the thick of endless battles without having to go through the campaign again. However, marathons are boring in the long run. Unfortunately, though, Valhalla doesn't have the one more round syndrome. However, once in a while, making such a run is a great idea to spend your free time.

With its roguelite take on the base game's formula, engaging story, decent amount of new content and excellent accessibility, God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla is a great expansion that is worthy of any God of War's fans time. The focus on combat may turn some players off, but it's only a minor issue in an expansion that could have been easily sold as paid DLC.
