Great British Railway Journeys is a railway simulator developed by the Dovetail Games studio, which is the spin-off of the Train Simulator series. The game is based on the licence of a television programme of the same title, broadcast by the BBC.
On a TV show, the host Michael Portillo uses a Victorian series of rail guides, known as Bradshaw's Guide, to travel by train through the UK. Over time, the format was expanded and new series appeared, in which Portillo travels around the world - from continental Europe to America and Australia.
The gameplay mechanics in Great British Railway Journeys is no different from the one used in Train Simulator. The player sits behind the steering wheel of one of the available trains and drives it on one of the available routes. When driving, the player must control speed and be careful of the traffic lights along the tracks.
In Great British Railway Journeys, all routes are within the UK. These include the East Coast Main Line and the Portsmouth Direct Line. In total, the game offers 595 km of railway tracks and 40 different scenarios. Trains included in production are also characteristic of the UK. Among them we can find such trainsets as BR Class 59 or unprecedented outside the British Isles BR Classes 444.
All routes included in the game were sold as add-ons to Train Simulator. With the launch of Great British Railway Journeys, the owners of the main cycle received an expansion introducing all maps available in it.
