Hearts of Iron IV: La Resistance is the fifth add-on to the 2016 global strategy game Hearts of Iron IV. Paradox Interactive is responsible for the development of the expansion.

Mechanics

Hearts of Iron IV: La Resistance add-on introduces the espionage mechanics, and enables players to recruit secret agents who can support the resistance movement in allied countries, help collaborators take power in a country without leaders, or decrypt messages intercepted from enemies. Every spy can be trained in a specific area. The intelligence agency is used for this purpose.

The expansion focuses largely on France, which is enriched with new national objectives - for both the independent part and the Vichy France. It is also possible to restore a monarchy in the country.

The main pros of the game

  • Espionage Mechanics: Many players appreciate the addition of espionage and intelligence systems, which adds a new layer of strategy to the game. The ability to conduct operations and manage spies is seen as a fun and engaging aspect.
  • Focus Trees: Some players find the focus trees for Spain and Portugal to be interesting, with Spain's tree offering diverse paths that reflect historical events. The potential for monarchist runs in various countries is also a positive aspect.
  • New Units and Features: The DLC introduces new vehicles and gameplay mechanics, which some players enjoy, adding variety to the game.

The main cons of the game

  • Outdated Focus Trees: Many users criticize the focus trees for major powers like France, the United Kingdom, and the United States as being outdated, dull, and less engaging compared to those of opposing powers like Germany and the USSR.
  • Flawed Intelligence System: The espionage mechanics are often described as tedious and unimpactful. Players report that the system is poorly balanced, requiring excessive micromanagement and offering minimal rewards for the time and resources invested.
  • Bugs and Technical Issues: Several reviews mention bugs, particularly related to the saving and loading of espionage operations, which significantly detracts from the experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Improved Balance and Depth: Users express a desire for a more engaging and balanced espionage system that offers more meaningful choices and consequences. Many feel that the current mechanics are superficial and do not integrate well into the overall gameplay.
  • Enhancements to Focus Trees: Players call for updates or expansions to the focus trees, particularly for France and Spain, to provide more depth and engaging gameplay options.
  • Automation Options: There is a sentiment that the espionage system would benefit from more automation to reduce the tediousness of managing spies and operations.

Summary

  • Overall, while the "La Résistance" DLC introduces some interesting mechanics and content, it faces significant criticism for its outdated elements, balance issues, and technical problems, leading many players to question its value for the price.
