Hirogami is a 3D platformer with logic elements, the world of which is built from paper. Bandai Namco Entertainment is responsible for the release production.

Gameplay

As Hiro, armed with a fan and a master of origami art, we explore the paper world in order to save our homeland from digital invaders. The ability to transform turns out to be essential in our adventure. We can spread ourselves out on a sheet of paper, to slip under deadly traps or cross a dangerous chasm as a paper airplane.

The protagonist of Hirogami can also take the forms of animals. The transformation into an armadillo allows for high-speed rotation, which enables the destruction of obstacles and quick elimination of enemies, while being a frog allows for jumping to previously unreachable heights. Transforming into a powerful monkey will help in the fight against pests among the tree crowns.

Console Creatures: 7 / 10 by Bobby Pashalidis

Summary Hirogami is fun, but it would be better if it were a pure platformer with a focus on origami. Despite the combat being a bit basic, the other elements, like exploration and abilities, help flesh out this story to stop the blight from taking over. It's a beautiful game that does a great job of showcasing the impressive art of origami, and it's paired with a great soundtrack that I adored listening to while playing.

Overall, Hirogami is a visually stunning adventure taking place in a beautifully folded world. There’s a lot to get out of each level with many different challenges to sink your teeth into, but unfortunately, it’s all let down by a lack of polish in gameplay. Platforming feels clunky, and gameplay feels undercooked; it made my time with Hirogami a mixture of being in awe of my surroundings and dismay when I launched myself off the map.

DualShockers: 6 / 10 by Ethan Krieger

Unfortunately, the platforming eventually starts to feel frustrating due to bad checkpointing, questionable hitboxes, and ultimate lack of variety. Combat is frequent, repetitive, and ended up feeling like a chore. There's heart and charm here, and I think a sequel could eventually turn this into a viable franchise. As it stands, however, Hirogami isn't a must-play.

The main cons of the game

  • Camera Issues: A recurring complaint is the problematic camera angles, particularly in later levels, which can hinder gameplay and make it difficult to navigate environments.
  • Mission Requirements: Users express frustration with the game’s progression system that requires collecting a specific number of golden cranes through often tedious and challenging missions, leading to feelings of being stuck or "softlocked."
  • Control Responsiveness: Some players report issues with controls feeling unresponsive or clunky, particularly during platforming segments, which can lead to frustration, especially in more difficult levels.
  • Combat Depth: While the exploration and platforming are praised, the combat is often described as shallow and lacking variety, which detracts from the overall experience.

Summary

  • Overall, while Hirogami has a lot of charm and potential, it is hindered by certain gameplay mechanics and design choices that could be improved in future updates or sequels.
