The game of the stock market has it that if we do not act prudently, one investment can separate us from both wealth and bankruptcy. But what would happen if we were given the opportunity to directly influence what happens on the charts reflecting stock prices? Insider Trading, a card roguelike dressed in the robes of a stock market interface, by Naiive, an independent studio founded by developer Hyunjune Joo, seeks to answer this question.

Gameplay

In Insider Trading, the gameplay takes place entirely on a virtual CRT monitor screen running a stock market program. Our task is to make investments and manipulate stock prices in such a way that at the end of the week we not only come out on top, but also meet the financial goal we have set for ourselves.

  • High Difficulty: Many players appreciate the challenging nature of the game, which encourages strategic thinking and skill development rather than relying solely on luck.
  • Satisfying Gameplay Loop: The gameplay is described as engaging, with a satisfying loop that keeps players wanting to try "just one more turn."

  • Replayability: There is enough content and variety in card and perk combinations to encourage multiple playthroughs.

The main cons of the game

  • Heavy RNG Dependence: Several reviews mention that the game can feel overly reliant on random number generation, making it difficult to create consistent strategies or win runs without luck.
  • High Difficulty Curve: While some enjoy the challenge, others find the difficulty ramp too steep, especially for new players, leading to frustration and discouragement.
  • Deck Management Issues: Players express concerns about the forced addition of new cards each week, which can bloat decks and complicate strategy formulation.
  • Lack of Clarity: The game has been criticized for not adequately explaining its mechanics, leading to confusion, especially for new players.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Control Over Deck Building: Players desire more agency in selecting cards and managing their deck without the forced addition of new cards each week.
  • Improved Explanation of Mechanics: Many users feel that the game should provide better tutorials or explanations to help players understand the various systems and interactions.
  • Balancing and Scaling Adjustments: Some reviewers suggest that the scaling of difficulty and rewards needs to be adjusted to provide a more balanced experience, particularly in the early game.
  • Additional Game Modes or Features: There are requests for different modes that would allow for more flexibility in how players manage their stocks, such as holding shares longer or having a more forgiving reset mechanism.

Summary

  • Overall, while "Insider Trading" has a solid foundation and offers a unique twist on the roguelike deckbuilding genre, it faces criticism regarding its difficulty, RNG reliance, and some gameplay mechanics that could benefit from further refinement.
