An original, retro-styled 2D MMO title that combines the elements of strategy, adventure, and role-playing games, created by the Ankama Games company. In the game we take on the role of a so-called Dwaala, an agent of nature, whose task is to take care of the divine Kwaan tree and to save the world by keeping it in balance.
Game for PC developed by the Canadian branch of the Ankama Games company, called KWAAN, is a retro style two-dimensional MMO title that combines elements of strategy, adventure and role-playing games. The whole was designed as a unique network ecosystem, where course of events depends on the activity and creativity of players.
In the game we take on the role of a so-called Dwaala, or agent of nature, whose task is to take care of a divine tree known as KWAAN and to save the world by keeping it in a proper balance. The key to achieving the goal is the ability to respect laws of nature and to actively participate in creating a vast ecosystem. Only in this way we are able to survive and not only to prevent the end of the world, but also to learn a mystery of the divine tree, and the surrounding reality.
Title is set in an open world, and the concept of the game draws slightly from sandbox MMO games, combining elements of strategy, adventure and role-playing productions. Thus, during the game we deal with exploring and discovering subsequent secrets of the vast universe, gathering resources, completing various quests and systematically developing our character thanks to successively accumulated experience points. At the same time, none of these activities is done for itself but for the good of the whole community and contributes to the development of a specific ecosystem in which tribes created by players can grow.
A key element of the gameplay is the titular divine tree, whose needs have to be taken care of by fulfilling his various whims and solving problems that it faces. We therefore expand its branches, summon animals, plant saplings or fight against environmental pollution, and from our actions depend KWAAN's mood. It is worth noting that the program checks each day the well-being of the tree, and if it is well – our tribe can peacefully continue to grow, facing new quests and discovering another secrets of the game. In contrast, if the tree is sad, it can even lead to a restart of the server, after which players – however preserving collected experience – have to start all the fun virtually from the beginning.
KWAAN for PC was realized in plainly old school pixel-art style slightly resembling popular Terraria – although we will not find here laborious flaking off of successive square blocks in order to obtain certain raw materials. However, just as in Terraria, action of the game is shown from a side, and individual objects in the world are built from only a few or a dozen of pixels.
