Starbound for PC and XONE is an ambitious exploration game that combines a sanbox platform game with strong strategic elements. This is the debut production of Chucklefish, an independent studio founded by Tiyuri'ego who is one of the creators of the cult Terrarii.

Starbound for PC and XONE offers both storyline missions and typical sandbox, unrestricted space exploration. The game controls resemble a traditional two-dimensional platform game, but it offers much more than just hopping blocks. The authors have offered a great freedom of actions and the players are free to choose which planet they want to visit. What is interesting, the surface is generated procedurally. The system controlling it not only determines the shape of the terrain, but also the weather, gravity, difficulty of vegetation, and the appearance and the habits of the local animals. As a result, each location offers something new.

The Escapist: 4 / 5 by Steven Bogos

It's a bit rough around the edges, and the first few hours are a slog, but Starbound is a deep and vast constructor with a killer soundtrack.

CGMagazine: 8.5 / 10 by Jake Yanik

In its feature-complete state, Starbound feels like a much tighter experience than it had in the past, and rather uniquely for the "Terraria, but…" genre, it actually has its own story that takes players across parts of its randomly generated galaxy and introduces them to the various playable races along the way.

  • Modding Community: Many reviews highlight the thriving modding community that enhances the game experience, adding new content and features that improve gameplay significantly.
  • Soundtrack and Visuals: Users frequently mention the decent visuals and excellent soundtrack, contributing positively to the overall experience.

The main cons of the game

  • Development Issues: Some reviews criticize the game’s development and the handling of the community by the developers, suggesting that the game feels unfinished or lacking in polish.
  • Lack of Content: Critics point out that the base game lacks the depth and content expected from similar titles, particularly in comparison to games like Terraria.

Summary

  • Overall, Starbound is viewed as a unique and fun game with a lot of potential, particularly when enhanced through mods. However, it suffers from repetitiveness and a lack of content that some players find disappointing.
