Although TPP action adventure games have led the way among Legacy of Kain productions over the years, there has been no shortage of side projects representing different genres. In this group one can find Legacy of Kain: Ascendance, an action platform game with adventure elements, developed by Bit Bot Media studio founded in 2024 and Crystal Dynamics company.

Gameplay and three characters

In Legacy of Kain: Ascendance, we view events from the side. The discussed item takes us to the fantastic land of Nosgoth and puts three characters at our disposal. We are talking about the vampire Cain, his betrayed deputy Raziel (whom we get to know as a knight of the Sarafan Order and watch his transformation into a vampire) and the vampire Elaleth (who brings out fast, constant attacks). Each of them has unique abilities, which translate mainly into the fighting style.

Legacy of Kain: Ascendance is a decent new addition to the franchise after 23 years. It tries to breathe life into the franchise, but it makes only a bare minimum attempt. Though the voice work and soundtrack are the standouts here, the action and platforming suffer from bad level design and bad enemy AI. Even the game's story suffers from simple and mediocre writing, something that was once a standout for the franchise.

Gameffine: 45 / 100 by Jay Krishnan

Legacy of Kain: Ascendance is the worst thing to happen to the IP since Square Enix. A project that’s half a rudimentary platformer and half a painfully faithful adaptation of a terrible graphic novel was, of course, exactly what I was wishing for the IP in 2026.

NookGaming: 2 / 10 by Andrew Camac

Legacy of Kain: Ascendance is a game that frankly doesn’t just tarnish the franchise but outright hurts it. It feels like a cheap cash-in based on a polarizing graphic novel with no love and care for the series it’s representing. Waiting twenty-three years for this to be released feels like a massive slap in the face for fans. ?There’s only a boring and trite time to be had with this title, where the only good aspects are the soundtrack and the voice acting. The only other accolade I can gift Ascendance is that it has managed to dethrone Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2 as the most dislikable title in the franchise. Hopefully, the fanbase can just emulate Raziel and forget this ever happened.
