In 2000, a real-time strategy game with RPG elements was launched and it was different from all the others. Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Simulator did not allow for direct control over the units, which somehow "lived their own lives". Over the years, it has not only seen sequels, but also a small group of imitators. This second group includes Lessaria: Fantasy Kingdom Sim described here and it's a game from the independent studio Rockbee Team.

Almost like Majesty 3

The developers of Lessaria: Fantasy Kingdom Sim do not hide the fact that their main source of inspiration was Majesty. Before the premiere of the game, its creators were even convincing that they were developing their work in such a way as if it was the third part of the classic series. This project stands out among others due to its modernized combat system and the ability to group heroes into units.

The main pros of the game

  • Nostalgia Factor: Many players appreciate the return to the Majesty-style gameplay, with indirect control and hero dynamics reminiscent of the original Majesty games.
  • Voice Acting: The game features the original advisor voice actor, George Ledoux, which adds a nostalgic touch.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: The game includes some modern mechanics like portals for hero travel and a bounty system to encourage hero actions, which some players find engaging.
  • Art Style: While opinions vary, some players enjoy the vibrant watercolor aesthetic and the overall visual presentation.
  • Active Development: The developers seem committed to improving the game based on community feedback, with regular updates and bug fixes.

The main cons of the game

  • Lack of Depth and Polish: Many players feel that the game lacks the charm and complexity of the original Majesty, with heroes lacking personality and interactions, leading to a more generic gameplay experience.
  • Technical Issues: Numerous bugs and performance issues have been reported, including game-breaking bugs, pathing problems, and inconsistent AI behavior.
  • Limited Sandbox Mode: Players have expressed disappointment that the game does not feature a true sandbox mode, with only a survival mode available, which lacks variety and replayability.
  • Balancing Issues: There are complaints about the game being unbalanced, particularly with certain hero classes being less effective than others, and the difficulty curve being inconsistent.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Hero Personalities and Interactions: Players miss the unique traits and interactions that defined heroes in the original Majesty, such as personality-driven actions and synergies between different hero types.
  • Expanded Sandbox Options: A more robust sandbox mode with customizable maps and gameplay options is desired, as the current survival mode is seen as inadequate.
  • Economy and Resource Management: Some players feel that the economic system could be more nuanced, with a desire for mechanics that encourage deeper resource management beyond simple gold generation.
  • Improved UI and Tooltips: There are calls for better user interface options, including rebindable keys, clearer tooltips, and more comprehensive descriptions for buildings and units.
  • Multiplayer Support: Some players have expressed a desire for multiplayer features, which are currently absent from the game.

Summary

  • In summary, while Lessaria: Fantasy Kingdom Sim has successfully recaptured some of the nostalgia and spirit of the original Majesty games, it faces criticism for its lack of polish, depth, and certain gameplay features that fans hoped to see in a modern successor. The developers have potential to improve the game significantly with future updates and community engagement.
