LISA - Definitive Edition is a remastered compilation of the post-apocalyptic game LISA: The Painful and its expansion LISA: The Joyful. The games are side-scrolling pixel art RPGs featuring moral dilemmas, a dark atmosphere and lots of brutality.

Plot

The game is set in Olathe, a desolate region inhabited solely by men. Years before the game's events, a cataclysm occured which caused all women in the world to vanish - or, at least, so it seemed. The game focuses on a bond between a former martial artist, Brad Armstrong, and Buddy, a young girl he finds and adopts.

Mechanics

LISA - Definitive Edition revolves around exploration, meeting new characters, talking and making choices that affect both the protagonists and the entire world. The game features many bloody, gruesome events, forcing us to take risks and suffer consequences. Our actions can result in playable characters losing limbs, which heavily affects the gameplay.

The game features around thirty recruitable NPCs. We can either take good care of them or risk their lives, for example, force them to play Russian Roulette for prizes. One must remember their deaths are permanent.

Battles are turn-based, each playable character having different skillsets. Some skills are offensive (weapon attacks, fireballs), others are supportive (healing or inspiring teammates).

Technical aspects

LISA - Definitive Edition introduces numerous improvements to the original games, such as enhanced graphics, an improved interface and new features implemented with the Switch, PS4 and PS5 controllers in mind. The compilation also includes new adventures, alternate endings, an easier story mode and a soundtrack expanded by over twenty tracks.

Players who have previously purchased both games in the compilation on Steam will receive LISA - Definitive Edition for free.
