Lost Planet 3 for PC, X360 and PS3 is another installment in an action games series that takes place on an alien ice planet. The franchise was created by a Japanese Capcom Company, but the third game was prepared by an external developer - Spark Unlimited Studios. The developer is known for Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, Legendary, and other games.

In Lost Planet 3 you go back to the roots of the series, to learn about the origins of the human colony on E.D.N. III (the story takes place before the events from Lost Planet: Extreme Condition). This time you take on a role not of a soldier or a warrior, but an ordinary mining mech operator - Jim, who arrives to this world in pursuit of money. The local colonization base, Coronis, is in urgent need of thermal energy for the Earth that is running out of its own supplies, so Jim and other mercenaries must head on to explore dangerous areas. Most of these are inhabited by akrids – the local species, in whose veins thermal energy flows.

The main pros of the game

  • Graphics: The game features impressive graphics for its time, with well-designed weather effects, lighting, and outdoor environments that still hold up well over the years.
  • Sound: The voice acting is well-executed, and the music complements the atmosphere of the game effectively.
  • Story: Many players appreciate the narrative, describing it as solid and engaging, with interesting character development and themes exploring the colonial history of E.D.N. III.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: Some users enjoyed the mech vs. monster combat, as well as the mix of on-foot and mech gameplay, which adds variety to the experience.

The main cons of the game

  • Mission Structure: The game heavily relies on fetch quests and repetitive tasks, which can lead to a tedious gameplay experience.
  • Multiplayer: The multiplayer mode feels tacked on and is largely inactive, diminishing the excitement that was present in earlier titles of the series.
  • Control Issues: Many players reported problems with control responsiveness and key mapping, leading to frustration during gameplay. This includes issues with hit detection and interactions.
  • Pacing: The game is criticized for its slow pacing, particularly in traversal, making the experience feel drawn out and tedious.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Co-op Gameplay: Players miss the cooperative gameplay aspect that was prominent in Lost Planet 2, feeling that the shift to a single-player focus detracted from the series' original charm.
  • Variety in Combat: Users noted a lack of diverse and satisfying weapons compared to previous entries, with many weapons feeling weak or impractical.
  • Exploration Mechanics: The game’s design limits exploration, with many areas requiring backtracking and facing respawning enemies, which detracts from the overall experience.
  • Intuitive Controls: Many players expressed a desire for a more intuitive control scheme and better key mapping options to enhance gameplay fluidity.

Summary

  • Overall, while Lost Planet 3 has its merits in graphics, sound, and story, it struggles with gameplay mechanics, pacing, and a departure from what made previous entries in the series enjoyable. Players recommend approaching it with tempered expectations, especially if they are fans of the earlier games in the franchise.
