Loulan: The Cursed Sand is a Chinese action-slasher heavily inspired by the original God of War series. In this title, you take control of a resurrected warrior whose main goal is to find the kingdom's missing princess. The protagonist possesses the power to control sand, using it effectively in both combat and exploration to overcome challenges.
A third-person action game focused on fast-paced battles with hordes of enemies and smooth changes in combat style. Loulan: The Cursed Sand is the work of the independent studio ChillyRoom. It is a small team composed of former employees from companies like FromSoftware, PlatinumGames, and Santa Monica. The game received support from Sony Interactive Entertainment as part of the China Hero Project initiative, which aims to assist Chinese developers in the development, release, and promotion of games.
In Loulan: The Cursed Sand, we observe the action from a bird's-eye view. The gameplay is based on bloody battles with numerous enemies or gigantic bosses. We make use of dodges, blocks, and special powers during combat. The main character of the game has the ability to control sand, allowing him to move underground, summon unique weapons, pass through bars, or transform into a whirlwind. Similar abilities are used by the strongest opponents, including a monstrous ice spider or a royal family possessing the power of the sun.
A crucial element of our struggles is the strategic switching between two forms that the protagonist can take. By choosing the Sand form, he gains a golden body composed of its grains and becomes a versatile warrior. However, he can discard it in favor of Bone – a powerful skeleton designed for fighting against numerous troops.
Transformations are also a key element in solving puzzles and open up other possibilities for interacting with the world.
The story focuses on the character of the titular Cursed Sand – a deceased exile who once belonged to the royal guard. The protagonist returns to the world of the living as a skeleton endowed with new powers, and his goal becomes finding his beloved, who is a princess of the fallen kingdom of Loulan.
The action of Loulan: The Cursed Sand takes place in a fantasy world reminiscent of the culture and landscape of the Middle Kingdom, including the historical Silk Road and the ancient city of Loulan. A significant influence on the storyline was the mummy of Princess Xiaohe, discovered by archaeologists in 2003. The gameplay was inspired by the early installments of the God of War series and arcade games from the 1980s and 1990s.
