Marathon is an online FPS by Bungie, the developers of the early Halo games (up to Halo: Reach) and the Destiny series, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Not counting ports - such as one of the second game, developed in 2007 by Freeverse - it's the fourth installment of the series. The previous games, that is, Marathon, Marathon 2: Durandal and Marathon Infinity (a prequel) were released in 1994-1996 on Apple's Mac platform (back then known as Macintosh).

Plot and gameplay

Marathon is set in the distant future. As opposed to the previous installments, the game doesn't have a story campaign - it's a multiplayer extraction shooter. Competing teams must complete objectives, then escape the area, The faster squad wins.

Is this gonna flop harder than Concord? The Marathon reboot is here, but it’s an extraction shooter and no one’s feeling it.

WellPlayed: 8.5 / 10 by Nathan Hennessy

Bungie successfully makes a grab at the extraction shooter crown with Marathon. Rook is a revelation for solos, and Cryo Archive is the best endgame experience in the genre. It is mean, yet fair, with more than ample flair. The biggest issue is that you're currently not playing it, hence my matchmaking woes.

One More Game: 8.5 / 10 by Chris Garcia

Marathon is a game of extreme highs but also rock-bottom lows, playing with your emotions like a fiddle. When the game gets going, its mix of masterful gunplay and well-designed maps will hook you from start to finish, spiking dopamine levels to muster the courage for another run. At times, it can also be brutal, where losing everything becomes a normal occurrence. It's not a game for everyone, even less so for a title in the extraction shooter genre. That said, as someone who has been enthralled by the worlds and titles Bungie has built in Destiny, it is sad to know that many will not stick with Marathon, or even try it out, due to negative word-of-mouth.

For those not put off by the more hardcore nature of what Bungie delivered, I highly recommend you give Marathon a try. You might just become as hooked as I did.
