A free-to-play tactical game, made in a similar style to the Front Mission series. In Mecharashi we end up on a futuristic island and play as a commander of a squad of mechs, being allowed to pick their gear and their pilots. The game features turn-based combat and we can aim at specific parts of enemy machines.

In 2022, Square Enix announced that in collaboration with the BlackJack Studio team, they will create the game Front Mission 2089: Borderscape. Although this project was eventually cancelled, the team behind it did not completely write it off as a loss and built a new venture on its ruins. We are talking about the tactical game described here, titled Mecharashi, distributed in a free-to-play model with microtransactions.

Interestingly, Square Enix saw enough similarities in both projects that it decided to file a lawsuit against BlackJack Studio. The publisher demanded compensation and removal of elements that, in their opinion, violated copyright laws (which covered both the visuals and mechanics).

Gameplay

In Mecharashi we watch the action in an isometric view.

Island engulfed in war

During the game, we enter a futuristic world, specifically - the island of Milkhama. It has become an arena for battles between mech manufacturers competing for dominance over this piece of land. We take one side of the conflict and embody the commander of a mercenary unit of marching colossi, and our task is to lead it to victory.

Tactical battles

The pillar of the game consists of skirmishes with enemy forces, which take place in turn-based mode. The key to success on the battlefield is not only the proper placement of units, but also the strategic selection of targets. The game allows us to aim and destroy specific parts of mechs, which affects their combat potential on the battlefield. For example, damaging the hands reduces the effectiveness of their attacks, destroying the legs lowers mobility, while aiming at the torso, we can completely neutralize the target.

Personalizing mechs and selecting pilots

It's worth remembering that the same fate can also befall our units. This can be painful to the extent that the game allows us to adapt mechs to individual needs and preferences, by selecting parts and changing colors.

The main pros of the game

  • Tactical Gameplay: Many users appreciate the tactical turn-based combat reminiscent of the Front Mission series, with a focus on mech customization and strategic depth.
  • Visuals and Design: The graphics, animations, and overall design of the mechs and environments are praised for their quality and appeal.
  • Content Variety: The game offers a range of modes, including story campaigns, elite battles, and cooperative missions, providing ample gameplay opportunities.
  • F2P Friendly: Some players have noted that it is possible to progress without spending money, as the game offers a decent amount of free pulls and rewards.
  • Nostalgia Factor: Fans of the Front Mission series find the game a nostalgic return to the tactical mech genre.

The main cons of the game

  • Aggressive Monetization: Users frequently mention the predatory gacha mechanics that encourage spending, with multiple currencies and paywalls that can hinder progression.
  • Energy System: The game employs a stamina mechanic that limits how much players can engage in battles, leading to frustration and a feeling of being forced to wait or spend money to continue.
  • Grinding and Progression Issues: Many reviews highlight the grindy nature of the game, especially in the mid-to-late stages, where players feel compelled to spend money to progress effectively.
  • Translation and UI Issues: The quality of the English translation and the user interface received criticism for being confusing and poorly executed at times.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Deeper Customization: While mech customization is present, many players desire more depth and flexibility in how they can modify their mechs, beyond just changing parts.
  • Balanced Progression: Users express a desire for a more balanced system that does not heavily favor paying players, with some suggesting that a one-time purchase model would be preferable to the current gacha system.
  • Improved AI and Gameplay Mechanics: Several reviews point out issues with AI behavior during battles, suggesting that the auto-battle function is ineffective and that enemy AI can be frustratingly unbalanced.

Summary

  • Overall, while Mecharashi has its strengths, particularly in gameplay and nostalgia for fans of tactical mech games, the aggressive monetization and energy mechanics significantly detract from the experience for many players.
