MechWarrior 5: Clans - Ghost Bear: Flash Storm is an expansion to the science fiction simulation game released in October 2024, allowing us to take control of a powerful mech. The creators behind the development of this add-on are the same as those of the base game MechWarrior 5: Clans - it is the Canadian studio Piranha Games.

New features in the expansion

The biggest novelty introduced in MechWarrior 5: Clans - Ghost Bear: Flash Storm is the story campaign. The leading role in it is played by the elite unit Silveroot Keshik, which steps into action, wanting to prove the strength of the Ghost Bear clan and regain its lost glory, as well as take the lead in the race to Terra.

The main cons of the game

  • Short Campaign Length: Many users expressed disappointment with the campaign's brevity, stating that 12 missions felt too short for the price, leading to limited replayability.
  • Repetitive Mission Structure: Some players noted that missions often felt similar, primarily revolving around combat without much variety in objectives or gameplay mechanics.
  • AI and Performance Issues: While performance improved for some, others reported ongoing issues with AI behavior, particularly with Elementals getting stuck and not providing adequate tactical support.

  • More Missions: Many players wished for a longer campaign with additional missions to explore the new mechs and mechanics more thoroughly.
  • Better Weapon Balancing: Users called for improvements in weapon balancing, particularly suggesting that non-laser weapons need buffs to be more viable in higher difficulties.
  • Checkpoint System: A demand for a checkpoint system before boss fights was noted, as many players found the missions too lengthy and punishing without mid-mission saves.
  • Enhanced Tactical Options: Suggestions included adding more diverse mission objectives beyond combat and improving the functionality of the MechLab for easier customization.

Summary

  • Overall, while the DLC received a generally positive reception for its storytelling and gameplay improvements, it also faced criticism regarding its length, repetitiveness, and some technical issues. Players are hopeful for future content that addresses these concerns.
