Medal of Honor: Airborne is the next installment in the popular series which began in the late nineties of the twentieth century when it was present only on first PlayStation console. With this game, Electronic Arts introduces the series to the world of the modern consoles (PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360). There is also the PC version available. Initially, the plan was to release Medal of Honor: Airborne for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, but eventually it was abandoned.

Yet again we are taken to the turbulent period of World War II, and this time we take part in this conflict as a paratrooper. We assume the role of an American soldier, Boyd Travers of 82th Airborne Division. Each of the six campaigns begins on board of a transport plane, and we actively participate in the drop – on command, we jump out of the machine, fall freely, open the parachute, and finally land. It is worth noting that it depends virtually only on our decision where we will start the exploration of the battlefield. All missions are located in the area of the European continent such as Sicily, Normandy, Holland, and Germany (years 1943-1945).

The main pros of the game

  • Innovative Gameplay Mechanics: The parachute insertion system at the start of each mission is praised for its originality, allowing players to choose where to land and approach objectives in a non-linear fashion.
  • Weapon Leveling System: Players appreciate the progression system where weapons improve with use, adding a rewarding RPG-like element to the gameplay.
  • Visuals and Soundtrack: The game is noted for its impressive graphics for a 2007 title and is complemented by a memorable orchestral soundtrack that enhances the emotional experience.
  • Engaging Combat: The gunplay is described as solid and satisfying, with impactful weapon mechanics that provide a realistic feel to the combat.
  • Nostalgic Value: Many players feel a strong sense of nostalgia for the game and its place in the Medal of Honor franchise.

The main cons of the game

  • Short Campaign: The game is criticized for its brief campaign, consisting of only six missions, which some players find underwhelming.
  • Technical Issues: Numerous glitches, including clipping, disappearing weapons, and audio problems, detract from the overall experience, especially on modern PCs.
  • AI and Difficulty: The enemy AI is seen as lacking compared to other titles, and certain levels can be frustrating due to difficulty spikes and poor checkpoint systems that force players to retrace steps.
  • Clunky Controls: Players report that the controls can feel awkward and imprecise, particularly during parachuting and aiming, which detracts from the overall enjoyment.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Multiplayer Mode: The absence of a functional multiplayer experience is noted, as online servers are largely inactive, limiting the game's replayability.
  • Improved AI and Tactical Depth: Users express a desire for more sophisticated enemy AI that could offer a greater challenge and strategic depth.
  • Modernized Controls: Many players wish for updated controls and mechanics that align more closely with contemporary FPS standards, making the gameplay smoother and more enjoyable.
  • Additional Content: Some users feel that more missions or side content would enhance the game, as the current campaign length feels insufficient.

Summary

  • Overall, while Medal of Honor: Airborne is recognized for its innovative gameplay and nostalgic value, it suffers from technical issues, a short campaign, and outdated mechanics that may not hold up to modern gaming standards.
