MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death is a classic dungeon crawler with a turn-based combat system enriched with jRPG mechanics. Japanese companies Idea Factory and Compile Heart, specializing in publishing low-budget and niche RPGs, are responsible for creating the game. The most popular and well-known brand from the developers is Hyperdimension Neptunia, which includes several PC and PlayStation titles. MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death resembles many other console dungeon crawlers with manga visuals, such as Demon Gaze, Dungeon Travelers 2: The Royal Library & The Monster Seal or Stranger of Sword City.

Story

MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death takes us into a world devastated by a disaster that caused an eternal night to fall over the Earth. The only hope for the people is an old prophecy about the key to bringing the planet back to life. The main character of the game, Estra, is a magician with the power to control machines. She sets out on a journey to defeat the four deities living in the powerful towers located at the four ends of the city of Southern Cross. Overcoming these sinister enemies will open her way to the precious artifact necessary to save humanity.

Mechanics

The game is a typical dungeon crawler, in which we observe the action from FPP. Just like in the classics of the genre, players move around a grid of fields, being able to choose only four basic directions of movement. On our way we meet enemies, as well as various puzzles, buttons to open door, etc. The battless are conducted in turn-based mode in separate three-dimensional arenas. We command a team consisting of three wizards and their mechanical guards, and during each turn we choose whether the caster or her robot is to take action. It is worth emphasizing that we construct our metal companions from various parts, found or purchased, which obviously affect their range of attacks and abilities, as well as their strengths and weaknesses.

Technical aspects

From the audiovisual side, MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death does not differ from what other Compile Heart games have gotten us used to. We are dealing with colorful graphics and an energetic soundtrack.
