Metal Gear Survive is a cooperative action game with survival and stealth elements, taking place in cult-classic Metal Gear universe. Survive is the first game of the series developed without the supervision of Hideo Kojima, the legendary creator of the series. However, the game is not a fully-fledged continuation of the series, but a spin-off that attempts to use tried mechanics from MGS V: The Phantom Pain in a multiplayer-oriented title. The game was developed for PC, PS4 and XONE by the internal studio of Konami, which was responsible for the series, and managed to keep the trademark.

Plot

Survive creates an alternative aftermath of the events seen in MGS V: Ground Zeroes. The marine base which we’ve build in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker had been destroyed by XOF, a radical wing of CIA. All of the sudden, a wormhole ruptures the sky, teleporting the remnants of oil rigs, along with soldiers still manning them to another dimension. There, the soldiers of Militaries Sans Frontieres have to fight for survival in an unwelcoming world infested with zombie-like monsters and numerous dangers.

A decent survival game with a rewarding, if uninspired, grind to its resource collecting and base management.

God is a Geek: 5 / 10 by Mick Fraser

Metal Gear Survive is alright. It strikes such an almost perfect balance between mind-numbing tedium and rage-tinted fun that if you're willing to let it take you, there's a very compelling experience under all the brown and grey textures - just don't expect it to do justice to the franchise under which it shuffles.

Polygon: 5.5 / 10 by Michael McWhertor

There's a weird, enjoyable story in Metal Gear Survive for players who make it past the game's grueling opening hours, and there are flashes of a great survival game. But with a threadbare connection to the 30-year history of Metal Gear and a comparatively shallow game made in the shadow of The Phantom Pain, it's hard to recommend enduring the whole thing.

  • Poor Story and Characterization: The narrative was criticized for being thin and poorly presented, lacking the depth and memorable characters typical of previous Metal Gear games.
  • Always Online Requirement: The necessity for an internet connection to play, even in single-player mode, was a significant point of frustration, especially during server outages or maintenance.
  • Microtransactions: The inclusion of microtransactions, particularly for extra save slots and other conveniences, was seen as exploitative and detracted from the overall experience.

  • Co-op Campaign: Many users expressed disappointment over the lack of a full cooperative campaign mode, feeling that the game could have benefited from a more integrated multiplayer experience.
  • Character Customization: Players wished for more character slots and the ability to create multiple characters without deleting existing ones.
  • More Diverse Content: There were calls for more varied mission types and gameplay elements to prevent repetition and enhance long-term engagement.
  • Better AI and Combat Mechanics: Some reviews pointed out that the combat system felt janky and that enemy AI could be improved for a more challenging experience.
