Ubisoft company decided to try a combination of a growing social network with the potential of Might & Magic franchise. Might & Magic: Heroes Battles is designed for players who prefer quick battles over time-consuming development of virtual economy.

The core gameplay is built around multiplayer duels fought between friends or randomly matched players (based on the size of their armies). While installing the program, players select one of four playable factions: Heaven, Hell, Necromancy, and the Academy. Depending on the choice, you get an appropriate stronghold and a small starting army. As commanders, players can choose units, their number, and set the combat queue.

Skirmishes are turn-based. At the beginning of each round the chieftains can encourage their troops to fight (up to 10 of shouts per battle), temporarily increasing their strength.

Particular units have their own modifiers against certain types of enemies (e.g. cavalry gets a bonus to damage against infantry, however, when charging on a pike-wielding squad, it is the enemy who has the upper-hand), which makes it necessary to set the combat queue even before a battle starts.

Won battles are rewarded with gold, which can be used to recruit more soldiers and expand the stronghold in order to unlock new units.

Might & Magic: Heroes Battles is based on mechanics used in Might and Magic: Heroes Kingdoms, and is a sort of introduction into core installments in the series.
