MIO: Memories in Orbit is a metroidvania-style action platforming game, in which as a small robot we explore a gigantic spaceship to restore its former glory. The game features a side-scrolling adventure and is reminiscent of the Ori series. Its development was handled by the independent French studio Douze Dixiemes - they are the creators of Shady Part of Me.

Gameplay

The structure of MIO: Memories in Orbit resembles many other 2D metroidvania-style games. As a nimble little robot, we run and jump around the map, eliminating smaller enemies, and then discovering a secret boss. Precise movement is crucial for the gameplay. Apart from using skillful double jumps, we cling to points like Spider-Man and cut crystals to charge energy.

Xbox Tavern: 8.5 / 10 by Nathan Smith

MIO has a lot of features that other games in the genre introduced and found a way to incorporate and make them shine. The modifier system is similar to Hollow Knight or Ori and the Will of the Wisps. The accessibility option that makes each boss a tiny bit weaker after each failed attempt is similar to Hades. The extended platforming sections of the Ori games and Guacamelee are also present. MIO does a fantastic job of taking all these systems and making them their own while wrapping them up in a huge world to explore. This is Douze Dixiemes’ second game which follows their stunning debut, Shady Part of Me, and I can’t wait to see what they do next.

Daily Mirror: 4.5 / 5 by Aaron Potter

Combine this with some incredibly tight platforming and combat, and MIO: Memories in Orbit earns its place in the pantheon of worthwhile Metroidvania jaunts. As such, it’s a small-scale sci-fi odyssey I won’t soon forget.

It is a disservice to the beautiful world on display here that I was reset back to the start so many times and lost a lot of the meaningful progress I had made. MIO - Memories in Orbit is at odds with itself too much for my personal taste. But I also cannot deny that if you are a fan of this particular genre, MIO is one that should not be overlooked.
