Mordheim: City of the Damned is a classic RPG with turn-based combat, set in a popular fantasy universe of Warhammer. The game was developed by French company Focus Home Interactive and Rogue Factor studio. This title was based on a classic tabletop game called Mordheim, first published in 1999, which featured a story set 500 years before the main plot of Warhammer. Unlike many tabletop battle games from this universe, Mordheim did not focus on large-scale battles, but on clashes of individual units, each with their own, separate statictics. The creators of the virtual adaptation of that system made sure to make fans feel at home, adapting most of the original rules.

Story

The story takes you into the titular city of Mordheim, which, after getting hit by a comet, becomes a fighting ground for multiple groups and factions. Players can join one of the several organizations that made an appearance in the 1999 original, such as Skaven or the Empire’s mercenaries. You command a group of units, and move them from one district to another, while doing missions and fighting many dangers. In reward for your actions you receive new equipment and experience, which increases the strength of your men and gives them new combat skills.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and Setting: The game effectively captures the grimdark aesthetic of the Warhammer universe, immersing players in the decayed city of Mordheim.
  • Tactical Depth: The turn-based combat requires strategic planning, with mechanics like action points, positioning, and environmental interactions adding layers to gameplay.
  • Unique Warbands: Each faction has distinct units and playstyles, providing variety and encouraging experimentation with different strategies.
  • Character Progression: The RPG elements allow for deep customization of units, with permanent injuries and skills that evolve over time, making victories feel rewarding.
  • Challenge: The high difficulty level appeals to players who enjoy punishing gameplay and the satisfaction of overcoming tough odds.

The main cons of the game

  • Slow Pace: Many players find the gameplay to be excessively slow, with long wait times during enemy turns and tedious movement mechanics.
  • Frustrating RNG: Random number generation can feel unfair, with high percentages often resulting in misses, leading to player frustration.
  • Grind and Progression Issues: Progression can be painfully slow, with little reward for time invested, particularly in the early game when characters are weak.
  • Limited Map Variety: Players have noted that the game suffers from a lack of diverse maps and mission objectives, making gameplay feel repetitive over time.
  • AI Issues: The AI can behave erratically, sometimes getting stuck or making poor decisions, which can detract from the overall challenge.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Better Narrative and Campaign Structure: Many players feel the game lacks a compelling narrative or overarching story that ties missions together, missing the opportunity for deeper engagement.
  • Improved AI Mechanics: Suggestions for enhanced AI behavior to make battles more dynamic and challenging, rather than predictable or overly punitive, have been noted.
  • More Warbands and Customization Options: Players express a desire for additional factions, characters, and customization options to enhance replayability and variety.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Features such as faster turn mechanics, better UI navigation, and more intuitive controls are frequently requested to streamline gameplay.
  • Difficulty Settings: The absence of adjustable difficulty levels has been criticized, with players wishing for options that allow for a more tailored experience.

Summary

  • Overall, while "Mordheim: City of the Damned" is praised for its atmosphere and tactical depth, it suffers from pacing issues, frustrating mechanics, and a lack of narrative engagement, which can deter new players.
