The debut project of the independent studio Pigeons at Play seemed to have enough potential to attract the attention of one of the larger publishers. Mycopunk, a cooperative science fiction shooter, has come under the wing of Devolver Digital, enriching the publishing catalog of this distinctive company.

Gameplay

In Mycopunk we watch the action from a first-person perspective (FPP).

Last chance mission

During the game, we take control over the robots from the Endangered Globe Brigade, which received an offer they couldn't refuse from the SAXON corporation. In exchange for investigating the mystery of a planetary-scale fungal disaster, they can avoid being scrapped. Over time, it turns out that our mechanical protagonists have become entangled in a plot of a much larger caliber, and what looks like a simple natural disaster may not be one at all.

Combat and arsenal

The game is divided into missions, in which we primarily deal with the extermination of hordes of enemies. We eliminate enemies by making use of a wide range of futuristic weapons and gadgets. Our arsenal includes machine guns, shotguns, or cannons. Additionally, we make use of the unique abilities of individual robots on the battlefield.

Mycopunk Early Access review: This is how you do a co-op shooter

Normally, I wouldn’t expect an independent team to create one of the year’s best co-op PvE shooters. But after spending many hours with Mycopunk, I was blown away at just how much fun I was having, even solo. Between the uniquely customizable characters and weapons, the various fun missions, the variety of enemies, and how much fun the base gameplay is, it’s easy to believe how heartily I will recommend this game.

  • Improved Progression Systems: Users suggest implementing a more meaningful progression path for upgrades, such as a crafting system that allows for better control over desired upgrades or a way to recycle unwanted items effectively.
  • More Enemy and Mission Variety: Players are asking for additional enemy types and mission structures to enhance replayability and keep the gameplay fresh.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Suggestions include adding a mute option for audio during focus loss, better matchmaking filters, and clearer indicators for XP and upgrade requirements.
