Aliens: Fireteam is a third-person shooter using the licence of the iconic Alien. The game was developed by Cold Iron Studios, which was an independent team when work on the game began in 2016, but as a result of later turmoil found itself under the wing of Disney. Eventually, Daybreak Games took care of the developers and their debut game.

Plot

Aliens: Fireteam begins 23 years after events shown in original Alien trilogy. The crew of USS Endeavor receives a message from the planet Katanga asking for help. They are quickly confronted with the horror that Ellen Ripley experienced over two decades earlier.

TheSixthAxis: 7 / 10 by Nic Reuben

Aliens: Fireteam Elite has a lack of mission variety, technical issues, bad matchmaking, and a repetitive structure. All of that said, it's still a fun time. I'm off to play some more right now.

GameSpot: 8 / 10 by Alessandro Barbosa

Aliens: Fireteam Elite is a surprisingly deep third-person shooter with tight, enjoyable multiplayer action that has enough variety to tease multiple return visits.

TheGamer: 4 / 5 by Eric Switzer

I love what I’ve played so far and I intend to grind out all of the classes to unlock those perks so I can experiment with potential builds before Season 1 starts. I’d love to see new campaigns, new classes, new weapons, new mods, and new perks with each season. If the next four seasons are as good as the base game, Aliens: Fireteam Elite will end up in my permanent rotation with Destiny 2 and Apex Legends.

The main pros of the game

  • Cooperative Gameplay: The game is designed for co-op play, providing a fun and engaging experience when played with friends.
  • Solid Gunplay and Customization: Players enjoy responsive shooting mechanics, a variety of weapons, and a detailed class and perk system that allows for extensive character customization.
  • Atmosphere and Aesthetic: The game captures the look and feel of the Alien universe, with well-designed levels, sound effects, and nods to the franchise that fans appreciate.
  • Enemy Variety: The game features a range of Xenomorph types and other enemies, each with unique attack patterns, which keeps encounters interesting.
  • Replayability: The inclusion of challenge cards and different difficulty levels adds to the game's replay value.

The main cons of the game

  • Weak Solo Play: The game is not well-suited for solo players, as AI companions are limited to one class (gunner) and do not provide a strategic experience.
  • Matchmaking Issues: Players report problems with the matchmaking system, including a lack of quickplay options and difficulties finding matches, especially during off-peak hours.
  • Repetitive Gameplay Loop: Many users find the mission structure formulaic, leading to a sense of monotony after extended play.
  • Technical Problems: Issues such as crashes, poor optimization, and connectivity problems during online play have been frequently mentioned.
  • Limited Content: Some players feel the main campaign is short and that additional content (like DLC) should have been included in the base game.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Improved Solo Experience: Many players desire better AI companions or a more engaging solo mode.
  • Enhanced Matchmaking Options: Users want features like a lobby browser, quick match options for various game modes, and improved connectivity.
  • Diverse Gameplay Mechanics: Suggestions include more varied mission objectives, exploration elements, and additional game modes to break the repetitiveness.
  • Crouch Mechanic: Some players feel the absence of a crouch button is a significant oversight, especially in a game with tight corridors and friendly fire.
  • Expanded Lore and Story: While the game includes some narrative elements, many players wish for a deeper story experience and more lore integration.

Summary

  • Overall, "Aliens: Fireteam Elite" is considered a solid co-op shooter with a lot of potential, particularly for fans of the Alien franchise. However, it has notable shortcomings that impact solo play and long-term engagement.
