In October 2025, studios Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, which specialize in the slasher genre, released the game Ninja Gaiden 4. Subsequently, these teams tackled the development of the first expansion for this production, Ninja Gaiden 4: The Two Masters, described here.

New features in the add-on

Ninja Gaiden 4: The Two Masters introduces three chapters, which you get access to after completing the "base" game. The adventure takes you through Tokyo, bathed in sunlight, and features previously unseen enemies (including bosses) and challenges.

In addition, the expansion brings two new weapons, namely the Solitaire scythe for Yakumo and the Yakotsumon gauntlets for Ryu. Protagonists can make use of them at any stage of the game (even before completing the campaign from the basic version of the game).

The main pros of the game

  • New Weapons: Yakumo's "Solitaire" scythe is well-received for its design and utility, especially in its Blood Raven form. Ryu's "Jakotsumon" Serpent Gauntlets, while criticized for being underdeveloped, are still seen as a fun addition.
  • Boss Fights: New bosses are generally considered enjoyable and add some challenge to the gameplay.
  • Combat Mechanics: The core gameplay remains strong, with many players appreciating the intense combat and the return to classic Ninja Gaiden mechanics.
  • Abyssal Road Mode: This new challenge mode is likened to the "Bloody Palace" from Devil May Cry and is praised for its difficulty and replayability.
  • Graphics and Soundtrack: The visuals and music continue to impress, maintaining the series' high standards.

The main cons of the game

  • Short Length: The DLC consists of only three chapters, which can be completed in about 1-2 hours, leading to widespread disappointment regarding the amount of content for the price.
  • Underdeveloped Character Treatment: Ryu feels sidelined, having only one chapter compared to Yakumo's two. Many players express frustration over Ryu's lack of a unique gleam form for his new weapon.
  • Reused Assets: Many levels and enemies feel recycled from the base game, contributing to a sense of low effort in content creation.
  • Price Point: At $15, many users feel the DLC does not provide sufficient value for the cost, suggesting it should be discounted or even offered as a free update.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Playable Characters: Several reviews express disappointment that Ayane is not a playable character, as she is only briefly featured in the main game.
  • Expanded Story Content: The story is described as lacking depth and context, with many players wishing for a more fleshed-out narrative.
  • Additional Unique Weapons: Players hoped for more unique weapons for Ryu and a greater variety of combat styles, rather than a focus on Yakumo.
  • Cosmetic Unlockables: The absence of new costumes or weapon skins is noted as a missed opportunity, especially given the franchise's history of offering such rewards.

Summary

  • Overall, while the DLC offers some enjoyable elements for fans of the series, many players feel it falls short in terms of content and value, leading to a mixed reception.
