Not For Broadcast combines elements of adventure and simulation games. The game was developed by the independent NotGames studio, and published by tinyBuild.

Plot

The action of Not For Broadcast takes place in an alternative, dystopian version of the eighties of the last century, in which social unrest is the order of the day, so the risk of revolution is very high. During the game, we play the role of a man working in a TV studio as a cleaner. As a result of an unexpected twist of events, he joins the National Nightly News team. From now on, it will be up to him to decide what message is to come out of the TV news and thus influence public opinion. It depends on the choices we make whether his TV station will submit to censorship or decide to publicise the (usually sad or at least controversial) truth.

  • Unique Gameplay Mechanics: The game features a distinct gameplay loop where players manage a live editing booth, making choices that influence the broadcast and the overarching narrative. This mechanic is seen as innovative and engaging, akin to a mix of editing and time management.
  • High Production Value: The quality of the FMV segments and the performances of the actors were frequently commended. Users noted the effort put into creating a believable and entertaining broadcast experience.
  • Replayability: With multiple endings and branching narratives, players felt encouraged to replay the game to explore different outcomes, adding to its longevity and engagement.

The main cons of the game

  • Gameplay Distraction: Several users mentioned that the gameplay mechanics sometimes detracted from their ability to fully engage with the story and humor. The need to focus on editing tasks often meant missing out on important narrative elements.
  • Repetitiveness: Some players found the gameplay repetitive after multiple playthroughs, particularly due to the length of segments and the inability to skip or fast-forward through previously seen content.
  • Technical Issues: Reports of crashes and bugs were common, with some users experiencing significant issues that hindered their gameplay experience.
  • Confusing Political Messaging: A number of reviews indicated that the game’s political commentary could be perceived as muddled or biased, with some players feeling it leaned towards a centrist viewpoint that didn't resonate with their beliefs.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Skipping or Fast-Forwarding Options: Users expressed a desire for the ability to skip or fast-forward through segments they had already completed, as replaying lengthy scenes became tedious.
  • Deeper Character Development: Some players felt that the personal life segments of the main character lacked depth and could have been better integrated into the overall narrative.
  • More Balanced Political Commentary: While the game aimed for a critique of both sides, some users wished for a more nuanced exploration of political ideologies rather than a perceived anti-left bias.
  • Localization Options: A few players noted the absence of a French voiceover, suggesting that more language options could broaden the game’s appeal.

Summary

  • Overall, Not For Broadcast has been well-received for its unique concept and engaging narrative, but it also faces criticism for gameplay mechanics that sometimes interfere with storytelling and for technical issues that affect user experience.
