Orcs Must Die! Unchained is an action game with MOBA, tower defense and card game elements. The production features a free-to-play model with microtransactions and was developed by Robot Entertainment studio, who are also responsible for the previous installments of the series.
The gameplay of Orcs Must Die! Unchained is focused strictly around the multiplayer mode. Upon starting the game, the players will choose their virtual representatives from the hero pool available in the gallery. Each character has their own unique equipment, weapons and skills. The heroes have been split into two factions – the humans of the Order (created by the War Mage and the Sorceress after the events of Orcs Must Die 2), and the various creatures and monsters of the Unchained. Each team can be composed of characters from both factions.
The multiplayer matches in Orcs Must Die! Unchained mostly come down to sieging strongholds. The teams are made out of five players each; the task of each team is to defend their own keep while also trying to bring down the enemy defenses; minions controlled by the AI help the heroes with accomplishing both of these tasks, the players can decide which types of minions will fight on the battlefield, and also which path to the enemy fortress they should take. The system for controlling your own hero is very similar to that of most action games, featuring a third person view.
The game features a system for placing traps and obstacles known from the previous installments of the series. Some of the heroes specialize in defensive aspects, e.g. allowing you to upgrade traps, while the rest of them are skilled in more offensive tactics; however, every hero has a pool of basic abilities for sabotaging enemy structures. The player summons units, equipment and defensive structures by playing cards, which you gather for your achievements in combat and then place in your own deck.
