A 2D platformer, focused around making choices and dealing with their consequences and how they can change the world. In Peppered: an existential platformer our failure doesn't have to mean the end of the game. We can continue the story, however it may turn in a direction we won't like.

Peppered: an existential platformer is a platforming game in which our actions affect the course of the gameplay and the story, as well as its ending. The game was developed by the independent studio Mostly Games, and its release was made possible partially thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.

Gameplay

In Peppered: an existential platformer we watch the action from the side.

Platformer gameplay

At first glance, the game doesn't differ much from other platformers. The adventure leads us through such locations as the colonized City of the Abyss (once a land of the dead), sunny Beach City, modern Megalopolis, or the devastated Castle of the God of Death.

We go through levels, jumping on platforms, avoiding traps and bypassing terrain obstacles. In addition to this, we interact with NPCs (for whom we perform various quests), and we also face opponents, among whom powerful bosses are the most prominent.

  • Unique Mechanics: The game introduces various gameplay mechanics that keep the experience fresh, even if some players found certain sections (like the golf mechanics) to be unexpected or jarring.

The main cons of the game

  • Platforming Mechanics: Several reviews mentioned that the platforming felt stiff or clunky, particularly when compared to other platformers. Some players found the controls unintuitive or frustrating, especially during more challenging sections.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: A common complaint was the tediousness of replaying certain segments to achieve different endings, particularly due to the inability to skip cutscenes or dialogue, which can slow down the experience.
  • Golf Mechanic: The unexpected shift to golf mechanics in later chapters was a significant point of contention. Many players felt it detracted from the overall experience and was not well-integrated into the game's narrative.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Skip Functionality: Players expressed a desire for the ability to skip cutscenes and dialogue, especially when replaying for different endings. This would enhance the overall pacing and allow for a smoother experience.
  • More Save Points: Some users felt that additional save points would alleviate frustration during challenging sections, making it easier to retry without having to replay large portions of the game.
  • Control Customization: A few reviews mentioned the need for customizable controls to improve the overall gameplay experience, as certain actions were bound to the same key in different contexts, leading to confusion.
  • Expanded Content: Some players wished for additional content or deeper exploration of certain characters and story arcs, feeling that the game could benefit from more development in these areas.

Summary

  • Overall, while "PEPPERED: an existential platformer" has been well-received for its story, humor, and artistic style, it faces criticism primarily related to its platforming mechanics and certain gameplay choices, particularly in the latter part of the game.
