The second installment in the pirate-themed card game series, which started back in 2019. Pirates Outlaws 2: Heritage brings changes to the combat and character progression systems, allowing opponents to make moves during our actions and allowing us to upgrade our cards.
In 2019, the independent studio Fabled Game released Pirates Outlaws. It was a card game enriched with roguelike elements, set in a pirate-themed world. Over time, the developers began working on its sequel, resulting in the creation of Pirates Outlaws 2: Heritage described here.
In Pirates Outlaws 2: Heritage we can play as characters that vary in terms of attributes and skills. The choice we make is important as it affects our tactical options when it comes to battling opponents.
Similar to the first installment of the series, battles with enemies are the main attraction here. The fights are turn-based and we play cards related to using specific weapons or certain skills.
The game implements a system where the time until the end of a given turn is measured by a special counter, and its value is determined by our actions (primarily which cards we play). Additionally, opponents can launch their own moves while we execute our actions, forcing us to make more thoughtful decisions.
We collect relics during the game that provide us with various bonuses and unlock outfits for our characters. There are also various passive skills related to the titular heritage of individual heroes waiting to be discovered, which further enhance their combat potential.
Expanding the deck also plays an important role here. The game allows us to combine duplicate cards through a "three in one" system. After collecting three copies, we gain the ability to upgrade a given card by choosing one of two paths of its evolution.
As we progress, we also gain reputation and knowledge, as well as collect gold and gemstones, which can be invested in special golden cards. Unwanted copies can be disposed of on the black market. The game also allows us to select companions and add their cards to our starting deck.
Pirates Outlaws 2: Heritage includes two modes known from the original. The first mode is Navigate, where we sail across the archipelago and face challenges prepared for us, engaging in card battles, trading, and competing against bosses and legendary creatures. Additionally, there is the Arena mode, where we fight against successive opponents to eventually face the Champion. The key to success here is developing the deck, optimizing relics, and using special runestones that provide powerful effects.
Similar to the first part of the series, the graphics of Pirates Outlaws 2: Heritage are kept in a cartoon style.
