A set of two installments of the cult puzzle game series Portal, developed by Valve. In Portal: Companion Collection we play as Chell, who explores the Aperture Science labs and solves puzzles under the watchful eye of an AI called GLaDOS.
Portal: Companion Collection is a two-part set of the bestselling puzzle game series called Portal. It was developed and published by Valve.
The games that make up the Portal: Companion Collection take us on a journey to a science fiction universe, to be precise, to the Aperture Science Enrichment Center.
In the first game in the series, Chell, the protagonist, takes part in testing a prototype of the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, commonly known as the Portal Gun. This is a device capable of creating the portals, which function as passageways between any two points in space. The whole experiment is supervised by an advanced artificial intelligence - GLaDOS - which constantly comments our actions. Although the AI promises that a delicious cake awaits us at the end, it does not seem to have very friendly intentions.
Portal 2, on the other hand, takes place a few hundred years later. Chell is awoken from her cryogenic sleep by Wheatley, one of the artificial personalities created by Chell's previous actions. They are thwarted in their escape from the ruined lab by none other than GLaDOS, who comes back to life and begins another phase of testing while trying to rebuild the facility. Soon, things take such an unexpected turn that GLaDOS and Chell must form an alliance...
In Portal: Companion Collection we observe the action from a first person perspective (FPP). During the subsequent missions we mainly solve logic puzzles.
In the first part of the series, the puzzles consist mainly of placing portals in such a way that Chell can get to new, seemingly inaccessible places. She also uses the portals to neutralize automatic cannons.
Portal 2 not only introduces much larger locations, but also significantly expands the game mechanics. First and foremost, the game increases the capabilities of the portals themselves, through which beams of energy can be transmitted, creating bridges or streams of air that repel or suck in objects that come within their range. In addition, there are special gels that change the properties of the surfaces covered with them. We can also manipulate lasers reflecting from selected objects.
While the first Portal allows only for solo play, the second installment of the series also allows for cooperative play. For this purpose, a separate campaign was designed, in which we play as robots together with another person and, equipped with Portal Guns, solve complex puzzles. The game offers the possibility to play over the Internet or in split-screen mode.
The games that make up the Portal: Companion Collecion feature good quality graphics. Time has been kind to them, which is due to the style and the fact that the largest part of the game takes place in sterile, laboratory rooms.

Portal and Portal 2 are like a magic trick you'll never figure out or a joke that doesn't get old. The duology is just as fun and fresh now as they were when they were first released, perhaps even better. They run flawlessly on Switch and control impeccably with the addition of gyro aiming, so the Portal Companion Collection is well worth it whether this is your first time or your thirtieth.

It's hard to overstate our satisfaction with Portal: Companion Collection. Portal and Portal 2 felt incredibly fresh when they first released, and the years since have not diminished their immense impact. To now have two of the most unique and mind-bending puzzle games on a Nintendo console, and on-the-go if you choose, is a pure joy. If it weren't for the frequent load screens punctuating the experience, we'd have absolutely nothing to complain about here. The motion controls work like a dream, the games run at a near-rock-solid 60fps, and the writing remains as funny now as it did all those years ago. If you haven't played the Portal games before, this should be a no-brainer. If you have... well, just play them again.

Finding issues in these games is the real challenge. I just can’t. I’m not even angry, I’m being so sincere right now: Portal: Companion Collection is the real deal. It’s easily one of the best “retro” compilations on the Switch. You get two of the best games of all time running flawlessly on both docked and portable modes, with a fantastic framerate, motion controls, developer commentary, additional maps, online multiplayer, and more. Do yourself a favor and grab this cheap as hell collection if you’re a Switch owner. Even if you’ve played Portal a bagillion times before, it’s still worth another playthrough. Or ten.
