Quake is a remastered version of the cult FPS, released in 1996. The game was developed by the authors of the original, id Software, and Nightdive Studios, a team specializing in refreshing old hits. The MachineGames team, which has several games under the Wolfenstein banner in its portfolio, prepared two expansions for the needs of the described project, namely Dimenions of the Past and Dimension of the Machine. Game was released by Bethesda Softworks, the company taking care of the brand.

Plot

The action of Quake is set in the future. Main hero of this production is Ranger - fearless and armed to the teeth soldier. After governmental experiments with interdimensional travel brought to Earth a deadly danger in the form of ancient evil, the protagonist has no choice but to take part in Operation Counterstrike and find four ancient runes. Only they will allow him to deal with the threat before it is too late.

  • Atmospheric Design: The game's dark, gothic aesthetic and Lovecraftian themes are highly regarded, enhanced by an iconic soundtrack composed by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, which adds to the immersive experience.
  • Influential Legacy: Quake is recognized as a groundbreaking title in the FPS genre, credited with setting standards for multiplayer gaming, level design, and 3D graphics that many modern shooters still follow.
  • Quality Remaster: The 2021 remaster is noted for its graphical enhancements, quality of life improvements (like achievements and mod support), and the inclusion of original expansions, making it accessible for both new players and veterans.
  • Level Design and Variety: The levels are described as well-crafted and memorable, with a mix of environments that keep gameplay fresh. The new expansions are particularly praised for their creativity and design.

The main cons of the game

  • Aging Elements: Some players feel that certain gameplay mechanics, enemy designs, and level layouts can feel dated compared to modern standards, leading to mixed experiences, particularly for those unfamiliar with the original.
  • Difficulty Balance: The game's difficulty, especially in the original episodes, can be frustrating for some players, with certain enemies and encounters feeling punishing or unfair.
  • Limited Weapon Variety: While the weapons are generally well-received, some players find the arsenal less exciting compared to other FPS games, with certain weapons lacking impact or utility.
  • Underwhelming Boss Fights: Criticism is directed towards some boss encounters, which are seen as anticlimactic and lacking strategic depth.

  • Enhanced Difficulty Options: A demand for more nuanced difficulty settings that cater to various play styles and preferences is noted, particularly for players seeking a more balanced challenge.
  • Improved Story Elements: While Quake is not primarily focused on story, some players wish for a more compelling narrative or context to enhance the overall experience.
  • Better Ammo Management: Players have commented on the restrictive ammo system, suggesting that increasing ammo capacity or availability could improve gameplay flow and reduce frustration.

Summary

  • In summary, Quake is celebrated for its innovative gameplay, atmospheric design, and lasting impact on the FPS genre, but it also faces critiques regarding certain dated elements and gameplay mechanics. The remaster has successfully modernized the experience while retaining the essence of the original game.
