Risk of Rain Returns

Risk of Rain Returns is a remastered, content-enhanced version of 2013's Risk of Rain. It's a roguelike platformer developed by Hopoo Games and published by Gearbox Publishing.

Plot

Risk of Rain Returns is set on the planet of Petrichor V. Having survived a spaceship crash, we must uncover the planet's numerous secrets. The task is difficult, as Petrichor V is home to many monsters, transported here before their homeworlds fell.

Mechanics

Risk of Rain Returns is a side-scroller. Before starting the game, we choose one of the playable characters, all of whom differ in terms of abilities and equipment. The roster features 15 survivors (two brand new ones), including the frontline-focused Executor, a monstrous, acid-spilling Acrid and the Loader, a walking tank.

After making our choice, the game begins. The player explores numerous locations, jumps on platforms, avoids traps and battles enemies. Combat is fast-paced, requiring constant movement, managing ability cooldowns and proper use of our weapons. Death is permanent, so when we fall, we must start all over again. Our primary objective during each level is finding a teleport, which will take us to a new area. Its location is always chosen randomly.

As we progress, we develop our characters, unlock new abilities and gear. The longer we spend playing, the stronger and deadlier all the enemies get. If you crave challenge, there are also special artifacts containing modifiers, which affect gameplay in various ways.

Game modes

Risk of Rain Returns supports singleplayer and co-op for up to four players (online and local). The multiplayer has been significantly improved compared to the original game.

Technical aspects

Risk of Rain Returns features simple, pixel-art visuals and a gloomy color scheme.
