An action game from Just Cause series veterans, in which we play as a character trying to repay a debt he owes. Samson: A Tyndalston Story features spectacular car chases and combat sequences, and the game is fueled by missions unlocked in exchange for action points.
Christofer Sundberg is one of the founders of Avalanche Studios, which became famous mainly for the Just Cause series. He left his company in 2019 and founded a new Liquid Swords studio a year later. Over time, other veterans from his previous team joined him, and their debut work became Samson: A Tyndalston Story - an action game set in a noir convention.
In Samson: A Tyndalston Story, events are viewed from a third-person perspective (TPP). The game features the titular city, consisting of open districts that we explore on foot or behind the wheel of vehicles.
The driving force of the game are the tasks taken by the titular hero. Completing them is necessary for him to pay off his debt, and to do so, we need action points, which are limited in number. For this reason, not all opportunities to earn money can be utilized, forcing us to make difficult decisions about what to focus on and what to ignore.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that the city continuously reacts to our actions. What we do and for whom determines how individual characters relate to us. Additionally, time works against us, with interest on the protagonist's loan increasing each day.
As befits an action game, during the game we participate in spectacular chases and fight opponents. The driving model is arcade-style, emphasizing performing impressive jumps and drifting through corners.
Regarding the combat scenes, we face both criminals who control the city of Tyndalston and the police trying to maintain order on its streets. The protagonist excels in close combat, eliminating enemies with his fists and kicks or using improvised melee weapons (like metal pipes).
As we progress, we not only gather the resources needed to pay off the debt but also develop Samson, unlocking various upgrades that increase his chances of success.
Samson: A Tyndalston Story tells the story of the titular Samson McCray, who returns to the hostile city of Tyndalston to settle his past. Settle it literally, as he is burdened with a debt owed to dangerous people who are forcing him to repay the loan by using his sister. Wanting to save her, the protagonist must do everything in his power to gather cash.
Players were quick to notice the similarities to GTA 4 in the teaser for the new game from the co-creator of Just Cause. Whether that's enough to get them interested in Liquid Swords' upcoming title is another question.

Game Ratings for Samson Video Game.
ACG: by Jeremy Penter
"A rough mixture of open city and structured missions, Samson does some things very well. However, for everything the game does right it misses the mark on something else. Janky combat and poor AI hurt the games main focus as well. "
WayTooManyGames: 3.5 / 10 by Dagmara Kottke
This title’s biggest strengths are probably the city’s atmosphere and the interesting day-management system. But, to be fair overall, Samson didn’t turn out very well. The combat, which constitutes the main core of gameplay, is undermined by repetitive animations and really strange enemy behaviour. Driving may actually be fun… if, of course, you are actually able to find any car nearby. A lot of technical issues drag the game down. It was simply released far too early. If the reviews haven’t discouraged you and you still want to try Samson out, at least wait for some patches. At the moment, it’s not really worth your time.
Prima Games: 6 / 10 by Ali Hashmi
Samson is ultimately a janky but endearing experience, with the foundation of something genuinely compelling. Beneath the rough edges lies a strong core and a likeable cast, but the lack of polish and unreliable combat hold it back at every turn. It’s easy to see what the developers were going for, but in its current state, it’s hard to fully recommend.
