Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is an action-adventure TPP game with an emphasis on stealth. It is the work of the Japanese studio From Software and has been developed by Hidetaka Miyazaki himself, the creator of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Dark Souls III.

Plot

The game is set in Japan of the 15th-century, in which historical features are mixed with fantasy. We play as a warrior given a task to rescue his master, an heir to an ancient bloodline, and get revenge on kidnappers.

The hero – a titular Sekiro – is a one-handed man with a magical prosthesis in place of his lost limb. This isn’t the only supernatural change in his body, as he is cursed to never find peace in death. He won’t get eternal rest till he saves his master.

The main pros of the game

  • Combat Mechanics: The game features a unique and satisfying combat system focused on precise timing, posture breaking, and deflection rather than traditional RPG mechanics like grinding stats. Players describe the combat as feeling like a dance, emphasizing skill and reflexes.
  • Visual and Audio Design: The graphics are stunning, with beautifully crafted environments inspired by feudal Japan. The sound design, including the satisfying audio feedback from parries, enhances the overall experience.
  • Boss Fights: The game includes memorable and intense boss battles that are both challenging and rewarding. Many players highlight the sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering these encounters.
  • Narrative Depth: While the story is less cryptic than previous FromSoftware titles, it still offers emotional weight and character development, with players connecting deeply to the themes of honor and sacrifice.
  • Exploration and Level Design: The game encourages exploration through its interconnected world, with verticality introduced by the grappling hook, allowing for different approaches to combat and traversal.

The main cons of the game

  • Difficulty: The game is notoriously difficult, with a steep learning curve that can be frustrating for some players. There are no difficulty settings, which can deter newcomers to the genre.
  • Limited RPG Elements: Unlike other FromSoftware titles, Sekiro lacks extensive character customization and build variety. Players can only use a katana and a set of prosthetic tools, which some found limiting.
  • Repetitive Mini-Bosses: Some players noted that certain mini-bosses are reused throughout the game, which can feel tedious.
  • Camera and Lock-On Issues: The camera can be problematic in tight spaces or during multi-enemy encounters, making combat more challenging.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Difficulty Options: Many players expressed a desire for adjustable difficulty settings to accommodate different skill levels.
  • Character Customization: Users noted the lack of options for customizing their character beyond the prosthetic tools and skills, which limits playstyle variety.
  • Respec Options: Some players wished for a way to reallocate skill points, as the game’s skill trees are fixed and can lead to limited experimentation.
  • Multiplayer Features: Unlike other FromSoftware games, Sekiro does not include multiplayer or co-op features, which some users missed for shared experiences.

Summary

  • Overall, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is celebrated for its innovative combat and beautiful design, but its high difficulty and limited RPG elements may not appeal to everyone.
